The May 1 1860 convention at Colton was a pivotal gathering appointing a slate of delegates from districts and at large to represent the Democratic Party at the Charleston and Richmond conventions. Col. Preston and others urged unity while Gen. Garrington and Gov. Means faced opposition. Col. Mayne and Mr. Whett led a ticket aligned with the party’s aim for unification. A large delegate body was elected by ballot with lengthy speeches and committee assignments announced.
