Correspondence from Keowee Courier reports Lewaarp’s arrival in the steamer Arago from Southampton. A large crowd gathered at Subert street wharf. he was conveyed in an open barouche to the Astor House amid cheers, with cannons firing at Auburn. The piece notes political tensions, petitions, and a cultural scene with social events and sporting talk.
Lawrence and Boston report show relief funds gathering for fire victims. Members of the manufacturing and mechanical associations pledge a purse, private subscriptions reach substantial totals, and the city mourns while authorities assess mangled casualties.
