The revenue from a two cent per pound cotton duty in Macon for six weeks before November 1 totaled $450,000. It is projected that duties will exceed $500,000 more in November and December. The first treason trial of the postwar era is under way in Tennessee before Judge Trigg, in Blount County. John S Gamble, once an enrolling officer for the Confederate government, faces treason charges.
