The State Convention assembled in Greenville at eleven o'clock in the Baptist Church with General Anderson presiding as temporary chair. Gov Orr addressed the body urging unity to sustain the conservative movement and anticipate Philadelphia deliberations while warning of Radical gains and potential impeachment of the President. Delegates from districts were elected, with Jos L Orr named president and a slate of vice presidents and secretaries chosen before adjournment sine die.
Terrible riot erupts at a postwar convention in New Orleans with mobs outside and inside the building. Firefights kill and wounded, authorities restore order after many casualties. Governor and officials reported shocked as arrests follow. General Sheridan advised mobilization to uphold civil authority and prevent unlawful assemblies.
A great reform meeting in Loxpox attracted about thirty thousand attendees. Resolutions demanded a parliamentary inquiry into the Chief of Police, with petitions to Parliament read and circulated. The event proceeded with precision and quiet speed as leaders urged reform and accountability.
A Charleston woman, once the belle of the city, sought her husband who eloped after a wartime romance with a gambler. She traced him to Minnesota via Washington and St. Paul, learned he served in a Union unit under an assumed name, and finally journeyed to Chicago then St. Paul to locate him. She hoped President Johnson could help secure his release from service.
