A fire at the J A Phillips cream parlors, started with gasoline, caused two blazing outbreaks in a single night. Police traced the scent to Joseph A Phillips, who was arrested on arson charges after bloodhounds followed a trail from the scene to his North Fourth Avenue home. Bonds set at 3500, with trial scheduled before Justice Kinosid.
General A J Sampson of Phoenix is appointed Minister Presipotentiary to the Republic of Ecuador by President McKinley. The post pays 85000 yearly and marks a high territorial honor. Sampson has held roles from Attorney General of Colorado to U S Consul at Janrz Mexa, and is a prominent local and national political figure. The new board estimates city expenditures at about 300000 more than last year’s, and 100000 less than auditors’ figures. Separately Constantinople reports a Turkey Greece peace treaty signed in the afternoon. Also: New York money markets show silver certificates at 8.60, bar silver at 59.5, Mexican dollars at 44.
