A disastrous blaze leveled Bantaca Sampson and Golden Star Company tents in Guijus destroying the camp equipment and stores. Watchman Jose, left in charge, was burned saving a small cache of gold while a nearby mill and powder house escaped. Origin unknown. losses described as several hundred dollars. Beat and Sampson plan to leave for the camp tomorrow.
Joho Gustafson a Finland native aged thirty six died in the early hours at Sisters Hospital after a three year illness. He came to the Territory about two years ago and worked in Chaparral. Gus Swanson friends from Lynch Creek brought him to Phoenix where diligent care was given before death from stomach cancer after a ten day stay at the hospital.
An advertisement extols a tonic for digestion and general well being. It asserts relief from dyspepsia, malarial and kidney troubles, rheumatism, constipation, and insomnia. It promises improved appetite and sleep, claiming Stomach Bitters restores nervous balance and energy.
In Cleveland May 19 the M E Church General Conference elected Charles McCabe bishop on the fifteenth ballot with eight votes to spare. Dr Cranston won bishop by a sixteen ballot plurality of thirty. McCabe, born Oct 11 1836 in Athens Ohio, served as chaplain in the Civil War and later held church positions. Cranston, born June 27 1840 in Athens, Ohio, rose to captain in the U S service and has been book agent at Cincinnati since 1884. The ferris wheel project in Milwaukee near Lincoln Park is government supported and will rise 305 feet, lighting three thousand bulbs for naval interest. The Durrant case in San Francisco threatens no execution before December due to the bill of exceptions.
A new Phoenix to Ash Fork connection departs at 8:45 am weekly and arrives in Ash Fork in the evening to join the eastbound Overland Express. The service aims to speed business and mail transit to California, with night travel possible for passengers bound to Chicago in about three days. No sleeping car is attached yet, but added accommodations may follow if needed. Hood's Sarsaparilla touted for blood purification and cure of various ailments, with Hood's Pills promoted for liver ills and digestion.
The American Protective Association council reports that evidence shows the witnesses were unreliable and their statements incorrect. McKinley should be placed on the same footing as other presidential nominees, with no discrimination. Delegate Huddison claims a Canton interview with McKinley on the 14th was satisfactory.
Henry Bollin former Omaha city treasurer was sentenced by Judge Baker to eight years at hard labor in the state penitentiary and a $211,000 fine. He served nearly four years in office before his shortage was found in July. Bollin, 54, was convicted after a second trial in which the jury disagreed on the first trial.
May 19 dispatch from Wasaisarox notes Secretary of the Interior forwarded a favorable report to Chairman Sherman on the Taller bill. The measure would abolish the offices of Commissioner of Indian Affairs and Assistant Commissioner, replacing them with a three member Indian Commissioners board including two faith opposition members and an army officer.
Horrific reports from May 16 describe a cyclone blasting Gray's Hill and Sherman areas. Deaths mount from Keller to Denton, with dozens more bodies feared or recovered. Survivors search debris as towns scramble for aid and officials warn of continuing danger. Local scenes show demolished homes and improvised hospitals amid widespread devastation.
Kansas City May 18 reports a devastating cyclone across central Kansas. Dozens dead and about thirty injured as towns like Sabetha and Reserve suffer widespread destruction. The storm crossed Missouri Pacific lines near Blue River and moved through Irving, Franistort, Rileyville, Seneca, and beyond into Nebraska. Damage estimates run high with many left destitute and emergency appeals issued.
A six to four vote in the Alabama Senate refused to take up a resolution to investigate alleged election frauds in the Kolb Oates contest. Reports sought from Sunday School superintendents in Maricopa County urge prompt submissions to support a territorial association report.
