Local Arizona notes from the Weekly Herald 1878
The issue reflects editor Morford's weekly commentary on politics, candidates, and current events in Arizona Territory. It surveys Republican queries, McCord faction tensions, Hawaii annexation prospects, local finance talks, and notable residents and incidents across Prescott, Nogales, Yuma, and Santa Catalina, with broad connections to national affairs.
Arizona Territory politics and local concerns collide in long item
A long readable fragment covers county taxpayers league actions, lobbying in Washington, and Arizona politics. It notes the Citizens League of Maricopa county exposing county government fraud, efforts to block McCord’s governorship, and critiques of ex senators and lobbyists including sugar interests. Also memorializes F J Netherton of Mescal and argues political reform will improve the territory atmosphere with less corruption.

Reward Mine to Resume Operations in Arizona
The Reward copper mine, about twenty five miles southwest of Casa Grande in Pinal county, will be produced again after years of idleness due to owner dissensions. The property features a thirty six inch water jacket and ample water supply, with ore sufficient to run the smelter. Ten men were sent to commence preparatory work and repair, led by a competent mining man, aiming to boost Arizona’s copper output.

Senate Tariff Debates Highlight Hawaiian Annexation and Tax Proposals
The Senate discussed the Hawaiian treaty in the tariff bill, with Perkins pushing annexation and Quay seeking revisions to paragraph 118 on iron ore. Bleaching powder duty shifted to one cent per pound, with a debate on its use in paper pulp. The coal paragraph was set at sixty seven cents by a 3 to 24 vote. Allison moved to restore the Hawaiian treaty provisions without a vote after brief talk.
