Donofrio’s cactus candy a century old native industry
Donofrio's Confectionery at 1504 East Van Buren Street has long produced cactus candy since 1887. Co-owners Joe Donofrio and George Grosso ship the sweet nationwide and abroad. The firm now operates mainly retail from 228 North Central Avenue with mail orders comprising a large share. Five workers prepare the candy, including Bill French who has supplied cactus for over 40 years. Barrel cacti weigh 90 to 100 pounds each and are boiled in corn syrup and sugar in a four step, eight hour process before glazing and packing.
