Commercialized prostitution flourishes in Phoenix with beacon lights out and staffs limited during the municipal election. A secret report to authorities by the American Social Hygiene Association cites 15 houses of ill fame in Phoenix's Southeast sector as recently as last month, highlighting vice curbs amid election heat.
Three Navy F4U Corsair pilots are confirmed dead after their planes crashed on a snowy mountain during a ferry flight from Biggs Field to Litchfield Park. Lt. Comdr. Marvin Hart says all three were identified and died on impact. Pilots Lt(jg) George A. Heckler, Ens. James T. Pilgreen, and Ens. John E. Laurence Jr. were found near a 6,010 foot peak north of Superior after extreme winds and snow flurries.

In Maricopa yesterday Deputy Hendricks ruled the deaths of Claude Henderson and Vera Henderson as murder and death by own action. The pair, separated for about two years, were found in a car with Vera in the front seat with a neck and cheek wound and Claude in the back. A bullet hole was in Claude’s temple. Vera, a Southern Pacific telegrapher, had filed for divorce. Henderson managed a Western Union office in Willcox. Herbert George said the husband met her as she left work and drove away in her car.
In Blair Kansas a custody dispute between divorced parents led to a fatal shooting at Oscar W Tar ter's farm. A coroner's jury found two deaths murder and two self defense, naming Galen Wood and Oscar Tar ter as shooters. A visitor Frank Freiburg was wounded and Mrs Wood was grazed.
More than 70 planes from the Western Task Force searched a broad Pacific area south of Hawaii from midnight until dawn for a missing Grumman Hellcat night fighter and its pilot. The carrier aircraft crashed into the ocean during simulated battles of Operation Miki as the task force heads toward Hawaii for liberation.
An 18 year old sailor, Stephen H. Chapley Jr. of Uniontown, was killed when a Greyhound bus collided with a truck carrying 15 tons of steel. Thirty passengers were injured, fourteen admitted to Bryn Mawr Hospital and eleven to Chester County Hospital, with many suffering leg and foot injuries and blood loss after doors jammed shut.
