Four Occupants Feared Dead as Plane Crashes Into Detroit Home

A twin engine DC-3 cargo plane exploded and plunged into a house near City Airport. Four occupants of the structure were feared dead while three others were hospitalized in serious condition. Civil Aeronautics says the aircraft was given landing instructions and crashed about a half mile from the main runway. Rescue squads and fire engines responded to the scene. The house, not yet completed, was occupied by a family at the time of the crash.

Philippine Bandits Kidnap 3 Defenders In Batangas Attack

Manila reports say about 100 armed bandits attacked Batangas Constabulary Headquarters seizing 50 rifles from an ROTC armory. One officer and two enlisted men were kidnapped, with the incident blamed on dissidents linked to ex candidate Jose Laurel. Brig. Gen. Ramos flew to Batangas as authorities called the situation tense.

Dedication Service Set For Bridge In South Phoenix

A four lane Salt River bridge in South Phoenix will be dedicated with a ribbon cutting and parade. Harold Orcutt chairs the event, with Arizona National Guard Band and Lake Greenway Post Drum and Bugle Corps providing music. Col. Frank Fraser will stand for Governor Garvey at the ceremony, followed by talks from city and county officials. Representatives from Roosevelt Central Council groups will be introduced along with speeches by Mayor Udall and county officials.

Hope Held For Fallen B 29 Crew

In Bermuda the search for survivors of a missing B 29 Superfortress intensified as three Navy minesweepers two Coast Guard cutters and a large air cover converged on a debris field about 260 miles northeast of Bermuda. Debris and radio signals suggested crew aboard the missing aircraft may be alive with further distress signals observed and a red flare reported, prompting optimism from Capt. George C. Welch and Lt. Richard Mullins as they pursued the suspected ditching area.

DeMolay Boys From Arizona Convene Postwar Convention

Three hundred members of the Order of DeMolay are expected to attend Arizona's first postwar convention at the Masonic Temple. Open air arraignment for slaying youth in Idaho field

The 16 year old Neil Butterfield confessed to killing 7 year old Glenda Joyce Brisbois with a car jack and disposing of her body in a canal near Burley. He was arraigned in an open field to avoid mob violence and jailed in Twin Falls. Probate Judge Henry W. Tucker ordered the unusual session. Butterfield waived preliminary hearing on first degree murder and will be bound over to district court, likely for February trial. Sheriff Carlton described him as calm and the manhunt ended with his capture near Hammett after a long search in southern Idaho.

Girl Lives Despite 135-Foot Plunge

Reno Casino Owner Lincoln Fitzgerald Shot in Ambush

Reno police investigated a midnight ambush that critically wounded Lincoln Fitzgerald, 57, co owner of a major Reno casino, at his home. Authorities said the attack resembled gangland violence and could be revenge, with no definite suspect named. Fitzgerald, hit near the garage at 11 43 p m, remained alive after five hours of surgery but faced slim chances of recovery. His wife was at his side as doctors reported a severed spinal cord and injuries to his lung and liver. Police planned extra security at the hospital as the investigation continued. He and partner Danny Sullivan built the Nevada Club in Reno after fleeing Michigan. The couple have been married more than 15 years.

Plane Crash Reported Near Vancouver Washington Gorge

Plane possibly caught fire and crashed on Washington side of the Columbia River gorge. State patrol units moved toward the scene about 25 miles east of Vancouver after reports of the wreck late yesterday.
