New York police posted 360 extra officers in Harlem after a pro Communist rally celebrating 11 leaders’ bail led to violence. Six policemen were injured and six demonstrators jailed amid bricks and bottles hurled from tenement roofs.
The 10 day Arizona State Fair opened at 10:30 a.m. with Governor Dana E. Garvey cutting a satin ribbon and a 19 gun salute. Admission is 60 cents for adults and 25 cents for children 6 to 12. The event featured the Arizona National Guard honor guard, bands, and a downtown parade by school groups. Secretary Paul F. Jones urged visitors to spend two days to see all exhibits across agricultural, industrial, and mineral displays statewide.
The program lists free vaudeville shows at Fountain Plaza starting 11 30 a m with 1 00 2 15 and 3 30 p m shows. Horse racing first post time 1 30 p m in front of the grandstand.
