CAPE KENNEDY UPS United States orbited the Interplanetary Monitoring Platform a 128 pound physics lab designed to detect radiation storms for astronauts bound for the moon. After hours of doubt engineers confirmed the IMP separated from the Delta rocket and now tracks space radiation risks.
Kathryn O H Granahan treasurer of the United States is said to be in fair condition after emergency brain surgery at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital. Doctors noted the malignancy involved but indicated progress and cautious optimism for recovery. The Easton native, former Philadelphia congresswoman, served in Congress from 1956 to 1963 and was named Treasury secretary in 1963 by President Kennedy.
Thick smoke and flames delayed rescue efforts after a powerful explosion at the Dhori coal mine northeast of Calcutta. Officials estimate up to 250 killed with mining sources suggesting as many as 375 dead. The blast in Hazaribagh district destroyed the engine room and turned the pit into a raging inferno.

Two men about 25 and wearing masks and makeup knocked at the Mur ray couple's motel door at 9 30 last night. They produced a pistol and demanded fifty dollars from Mr Murray's wallet before leaving.
Arizona's copper industry remains strong but wage growth outstrips productivity, sparking concern from Frank P. Knight of the Arizona State Department of Mineral Resources. He notes 1964 wages rose far faster than living costs and productivity, warning some major mines may close if trends do not reverse. Mayor Milton Graham on a European tour with 19 Phoenician colleagues will fly to St. Louis for the four day U.S. Conference of Mayors. In the ninth at 1 1/16 miles Mr Trappe ridden by Ruane paid 12.40 7.20 6.00 with Red Jay and Brother Bones close behind. attendance was 26,861 and handle 2,707,627. In the other ninth at 11/16 mile Sadowo ridden by Culmone paid 4.60 3.00 2.40 with Strius and Saragold chasing. no further details.
