A large explosion at Eastington Colliery in Durham trapped 78 miners underground 900 feet down. By afternoon 14 bodies were recovered and 63 remained entombed as rescuers labored through 1,000 yards of debris.
Memorial Day programs will be held across Arizona with Gold Star Mothers as guests of honor. In Phoenix a 9 a.m. ceremony decorates graves, chaplains lead prayers, taps sound, and a 10:45 a.m. gathering at the Frank Luke statue commences with the 108th Army Band. Maj. Paul C. McCandless will address the crowd, with Rabbi A. L. Krohn and Lt. Col. Albert Braun participating. A 11 a.m. Luke AFB F-84 flyover accompanies a firing salute before a post ceremony color display. Additional services include Catholic mass at Encanto Park, Holy Communion at Trinity Cathedral, and Lutheran Bible study observances. World-wide memorials mark the day, including a Pearl Harbor sunrise tribute to USS Arizona victims.
A state witness in the trial of E. B. Chitwood said his life was threatened if he did not testify correctly. Jimmy Fant of Los Angeles reported a phone threat Sunday night with menacing words. Chitwood, operator of a motel on the Nogales Highway, faces conspiracy charges in this Pima County grand jury session. Fant testified about a prior conversation in which he offered money for influence but denied receiving any funds. Five other witnesses refused to answer, citing self incrimination. Morrison sought to compel Harold Porter to testify over claims of hush money tied to an official.
Fanny Brice comedienne of stage screen and radio known for Baby Snooks died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital age 59 after a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Attending were her son Billy and daughter and son in law Mrs Ray Stark. Her career spanned Ziegfeld Follies to television. Born October 29 1891 in New York City.
Oslo notes Capt Charles Blair took off from Bardu northern Norway for a nonstop North Pole crossing aiming for Fairbanks Alaska in 10 to 12 hours. He previously set a New York to London record and carries 3,000 letters to be auctioned in New York for the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund.
Chinese Peiping radio aired a recorded peace message attributed to American POW Sgt Alan B Robertson. His wife and mother deny the claim, saying he would never advocate communism. The broadcast urged withdrawal of foreign troops from Korea and framed the war as a peace effort by both sides.
In a senate debate on the Central Arizona Project Bill California Senator William Knowland charged Arizona seeks the largest reclamation project with taxpayers bearing the cost. He said Arizona blocked river peace for 30 years and threatened Supreme Court action to settle the dispute as Congress weighs limits during national emergency. Arizona opponents, led by Senator Ernest McFarland, push amendments to restrict construction, contracts, and appropriations until the case is resolved.
International News Service reports views from Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, and Price Stabilizer DiSalle. Vandenberg cites chances for negotiated peace without imperiling U S air power. Roosevelt hints at peace through attrition potentially prompting talks with Chinese Communists. DiSalle cautions against partial control and half freedom in price regulation.
Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, testifying at the MacArthur hearings, urged a continued air power buildup to deter Soviet air and atomic capabilities. He defined complete victory in Korea as unification under a democratic government and a Korean Chinese treaty, amid questions on MacArthur. He also noted calls for F-84s for Korea.
The last day of school for Phoenix area elementary pupils is observed today. Dr. Donald E. Tope says students return Friday morning for report cards. Graduation exercises occur at eight elementary schools with eight grade work. The Phoenix Union High Schools begin commencements tomorrow at 8 p.m. with 215 Phoenix College sophomores receiving the Associate in Art degree. Other graduations follow Thursday and Friday at North Phoenix Stadium and other venues with speakers, solos, and readings planned.
Secretary of Defense George Marshall told Congress that the danger of a Communist attack in Europe has increased over the past months. He cited steady enemy buildup, especially in satellite countries. The government granted meat markets a two week extension to June 18 to post official retail beef ceiling price lists.

Arizona VA Hospital plans a co educational unit for women veterans with a private ward of four rooms and a staff of women orderlies and nurses. The Phoenix hospital will open the new 192 bed facility in August with space for future expansion, making Arizona’s first dedicated women veterans ward.
