Alabama Attorney General Richmond Flowers reports that a Ku Klux Klan member whose murder trial ended with a hung jury will face a new trial. The item appears in the digest alongside notices on national security and local community events.
Ottawa announced it expelled two Soviet embassy officials for espionage related activities. A. E. Bytchkov and V. N. Poluchkin were declared persona non grata after reports of attempts to pay Canadians for information. They aimed to aid espionage and economic intelligence, including data on Western Canada’s trans mountain pipeline.

President Johnson dedicated the Sam Rayburn Dam near Jasper Texas via long distance call, calling the $61 million project a fitting tribute to the late speaker. He canceled a site appearance, spoke to thousands by phone, and praised Yarborough Brooks Smith Carr and others on hand.
Defense witnesses testified today before the State Board of Medical Examiners in a case against Dr. James Cutshaw of Tucson. Accusations include sexual relations with a 17 year old girl and a 26 year old woman, with claims of abortion and supplying liquor. No criminal charges were filed. A university student and instructor from the University of Arizona praised Dr. Cutshaw’s medical skills and morals.
In Kwangju, 130 miles south of Seoul, at least eight people were hurt including five police as rock throwing demonstrators clash with authorities during a protest against Japan Korea normalization talks. Tear gas and riot actions followed a mass rally drawing about 30,000 people. Police arrested 33 participants.
Two suspects in an Indiana polis slaying jailed in Scottsdale were to be questioned by Phoenix police today. Alfred R. James and Steven Joseph Francis Allen, 23 and 24, were arrested after a $54 Desert View Motel robbery and identified themselves. They used Dale Wiseman Homer of Mechanicsburg Ohio’s ID and admitted taking his car after beating him, though they denied the beating was fatal. Pon May Fong, 25, son of the motel owner, said a gunman robbed him while renting a room.
About 200 people at a public hearing debated the Papago Freeway corridor from McDowell to Oglesby Road. Officials cited a three year timeline for surveys and design with a $40 million cost and 95 percent federal funding potential. Major concerns focused on needed interchanges and impact on homes farms and schools, with Luke Air Force Base opposing a Litchfield Road outlet.
The U S Bureau of Public Roads considers re routing Interstate 40 from Kingman to the Nevada border. The Arizona Highway Commission opposed the plan in its Kingman meeting. Two ASU student groups demonstrated outside the Federal Building on First Avenue and Van Buren over U.S. action in Viet Nam. About 12 protesters faced counterdemonstrators while 300 attendees heard Dr. Harry Bracken of ASU defend civil rights and peace priorities.
Police report progress in the robbery slaying of a Tucson service station attendant. Detective Captain Thomas Ricke says investigators have two descriptions and a footprint that may help locate a man seen at the station the night attendant Clarence Ready was killed.
A man detained for burglary is at risk of losing his driver license after answering no on an application to a mental institution. Investigators say he has been committed to hospital at least three times and once jailed for 15 burglaries. Joe James of the Arizona Highway Department notes perjury charges may apply for false license information.

At Williams Air Force Base an open house drew about 4000 attendees. Captain Dale C. Holt age 27 from Salt Lake City received the outstanding pilot graduate award from among eight air bases. He is a Viet Nam veteran.
A superior court jury found George Grimmett 57 guilty of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of neighbor Walter Cooper 74 with a 12 gauge shotgun last September. Sentencing date was not announced.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Board will dispatch five Japanese officers to Anchorage around May 20 to investigate black market pistol activity. The mission aims to gather data to support Japan's drive to curb pistol smuggling.
