Clifford Battershaw 17 and Victor Sweet 24 were captured after a long chase from a speeding car. The trio had escaped the Douglas County jail in Omaha March 4.

Boy leads officers to body of victim in killing case
The body of Leonard Rexford Fenton of Los Angeles was found five miles south of Yuma after a 16 year old boy confessed the killing. Peter Saunders of Long Island claimed he accidentally shot Fenton while hunting a month earlier and directed officers to the body after being brought from Phoenix. The youth said he shot Fenton in the back of the head while aiming at a bird, then drove Fenton’s truck to Phoenix. Saunders described leaving Long Island two months ago and working on a ranch near Yuma before the shooting. He fled the County Detention Home but was recaptured. Authorities learned of the slaying during further questioning.

Two severely wounded soldiers from the United States First Cavalry Division in Korea are in custody after going AWOL from a Japan based unit. Pfc. Alonzo G. Simmons, 21, of North Little Rock Arkansas and Pvt. Ronald H. Scheuring, 18, of Mesa Arizona, rode planes and jeeps back toward the front seeking to rejoin battalions. Simmons fought for northern Korea, Scheuring suffered knee injuries from a mortar blast. Both men were returned to division HQ for checks with their original units.
