Dogs compete for top titles at the Kennel Club Show at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. Alongside breed judging, events include coordinated trained collie performances, junior showmanship, and a best dog in show contest.
NAMED BEST dog in yesterday's cocker show was Champion Tiger Tail Gay Pilot, owned by H. R. Bown Jr. of Northridge. Other cockers winning include solid black winner Crile Acres Cactus King of Phoenix and Windswept Little Bet owned by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Present of Tucson, with multiple best of variety and best opposite sex awards across color groups. Tonight's show schedule lists classes for Weimaraners and several spaniels and retrievers at 7 p.m.
A long line formed outside the State Tax Commission's income tax division as filings surged. Chairman Thad M. Moore said revenue through last Tuesday rose 30 percent from the prior year, with total collections at 1,268,219.79 compared to 976,722.69 last year. The department will stay open late next week, and mail filers must postmark by midnight March 15 to avoid penalties.
Funeral services were held for Esther Gutierrez seven and Julia Gutierrez three at Queen of Peace Church in Mesa. Burial followed at Mesa Cemetery. The siblings disappeared Thursday night and were found suffocated in an old icebox at their parents home. Investigators believe they crawled inside while playing. whether wind blew the door shut or another child closed it remains unclear.
Carl Barth a winter visitor died yesterday at his home 1715 Whittier Drive after a brief illness He was a retired painting contractor native of Germany and had lived in the United States 59 years Barth came to Phoenix two weeks ago from New Castle Survivors include daughter Miss Grace M Barth New Castle and two sons Norman and Harold in Pennsylvania The body was sent to New Castle Pa for funeral services and burial per A L Moore and Sons Mortuary
Funeral services and burial for Mrs Sophie M Husick 58 will be in Union Town Pennsylvania. Died Thursday in Mesa survivors include husband Martin four sons Martin Jr John Joseph all of Baltimore Louis of Mesa and daughters Mrs Mary Garrett Tennessee and Anna Husick Baltimore.
Irving Fink, on trial for murder in El Paso, testified the June 4, 1948 shooting of salesman Irving Kordish was accidental during a dispute over binoculars. He said Kordish struck him, he held the pistol, and it fired twice as he tried to defend himself. he fled to Mexico after the incident.
A Pima County grand jury hearing was adjourned until Monday creating a lull in investigations. Jimmy Fant of Los Angeles testified for about an hour and seven minutes about his role in the 1946 political campaign for former Sheriff Jerome P. Martin, described by the County Attorney's Office as a former gambler who came from the Pacific Coast to testify.
Two hundred forty two votes were cast at noon in a 100000 bond election at Isaac School on 35th Avenue and McDowell Road. Officials call the turnout fairly heavy for a proposal to build a 500000 school plant at 31st Avenue and Roosevelt Street with a 400000 federal grant sought. Polls stay open until 6 pm.
Annie L. Johnson 64 died yesterday at her daughter's home, Mrs. Fred Ingersoll, 214 West Turney Ave. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Memory Chapel of A. L. Moore and Sons Mortuary. Burial in Bellingham, Wash. Survived by son Arthur T. of Bellingham, a daughter, two sisters, and two brothers. She was a Milwaukee native who moved to Phoenix 30 years ago and belonged to Arizona White Shrine, O E S Ferndale Wash, and First Church of Christ Scientist Bellingham.
Earl Browder faces a contempt of Congress trial without seven senators and an ex-senator as witnesses. Marshals report former Senator Tydings is in England and the others are not to be found. Browder is indicted on 16 counts over answers to questions about communists in the State Department. The trial resumes Monday after a weekend recess.
President Truman designates May 20, 1951 as I Am An American Day in a White House proclamation. The observance urges unity of purpose through liberty, equality, and justice, with officials and organizations urged to hold nationwide ceremonies around May 20 for all citizens to participate.
Blasting at the Phelps Dodge open pit copper mine near Bisbee began as part of the inauguration preparations. The Sacramento Hill area, adjacent to the famous Sacramento pit, shook residents who described it as a minor earthquake. Road blocks were set up around the blasting site by the sheriff's office.
Mrs Nillie Cummins Laird 64 of Tempe died early today at her home after a long illness. She was born in Illinois and moved to Tempe as an infant. Survivors include her husband William E Laird a Tempe druggist a daughter Mrs Minnie Raymond a brother James Cummins and two grandchildren all of Tempe.
Red Cross volunteers reported pledges of 84802 toward a 248978 goal as of last night. The women’s division, serving the residential district, leads with 52 percent of its goal. Mrs J W Hooper heads the Mary Bethune Division extending from Central Avenue to 17th Avenue and from Jackson Street to the Salt River, starting at 1 30 p m tomorrow.
The Arizona State Hospital for the Insane received a clean bill of health after a two day investigation by a State Medical Society committee. Dr. Victor H. Simecek had alleged irregularities but findings found no fault and dismissed the objections as typical workplace concerns. Gene Doyle, board chairman, said the board requested impartial review by professionals familiar with hospital issues. Wes A. Townsend noted the committee’s thorough look and that the legislature did not become involved.
Nachitoches college students mourn a freshman named Allen Kaplan from Chelsea Massachusetts who died after falling from a 40 foot bluff during a prank near Northwestern State College. Sheriff Earl Morris saw no criminal charges, while campus leaders vow to curb hazing.
Mount Mihara on Oshima Island, 50 miles south of Tokyo, erupted late yesterday sending three lava streams down the 2,500 foot peak. Each flow ran about 150 feet wide and nine feet thick, destroying two homes at the 1,500 foot level but sparing base villages. Streams slowed to three feet per hour as seismologists from Tokyo University said no further eruptions were expected. The last eruption occurred July 15.
The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union adopted a record peacetime state budget for 1951 totaling 451 billion rubles with 96 billion earmarked for defense and 22 billion for the navy while 74 billion goes to the army. Finance Minister Szerev noted ruble value. defense equals about 24 billion in dollars. The body will soon pass a law outlawing war propaganda as part of a peace protection act.
The City Engineering Division said Osborn Road work will take two more months to complete. Curbs, gutters, and paving are done between 19th and 15th avenues, with curb work on the south side from 15th to Seventh avenues. Rough grading occurs from Seventh to Central avenues. sidewalks not yet started. Arizona Sand and Rock Company estimated the $130,000 project ends May 22.
Colonel Henry J. Amen, commander at Luke Air Force Base, will address the Glendale Chamber of Commerce luncheon Tuesday. The talk is open to the public. Amen previously commanded Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D C, and Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas and has 15 years of service.
Prescott March 10 AP Air search over the area for Cedric Norbury Terry Breck and Albert Lindauer missing on a flight to Texas was abandoned. CAP and military planes had scoured the area yesterday. CAP pilot William Prince and Dr Frederick Shannon were uninjured after a canyon crash two miles west of Seligman, then walked to a farm and were driven to safety.
A 26 year old Phoenix housewife was held in city jail after allegedly attempting a knifepoint robbery of cab driver James Brown. Brown described picking up the woman at the Arizona Hotel bar and driving to her home before she demanded money or risked being cut. She was arrested shortly after at a South 19th Avenue bar, with Detective Arthur Fairbanks crediting Brown's description.
At Luke Air Force Base the Michigan Air National Guard strength at the new training center was set at 1400 personnel with 60 more airmen expected to arrive soon to complete the unit. Training and administrative duties have begun.
A Phoenix Fire Department report covering eight months of the fiscal year shows 69 percent of calls from fire alarm boxes were false alarms, compared with about 1 percent of telephone alarms. Officials caution the figures do not imply Phoenix could do without a fire alarm system.
The Army canceled its decree calling ROTC students from Arizona State College Tempe and the University of Arizona in Tucson to active duty this summer. Col. L. H. Caruthers at AMD HQ had announced graduates would enter service in July August or September. Sixth Army offered no reason for the reversal.

Sen. Tom Connally of Texas called the Detroit and Wayne County labor unions demand for Sen. Arthur Vandenberg's resignation shameful. He urged that Vandenberg be continued in office indefinitely, praising his service to Michigan, the United States, and world peace.
