Pyle Assails Exploitation In Water Lack

Gov. Howard Pyle condemned water exploitation by cotton interests after a 20 inch well on adjacent land dried up a subdivision east of Mesa. United Air Lines Missing Plane Sought After Distress Reported

Denver and Cheyenne reporters say planes and crews searched northern Colorado and southern Wyoming for a DC-6 missing with 50 on board. Wreckage sighted near Fort Collins. farmers heard a craft in distress but reports could not be confirmed.

Plane missing after transcontinental flight over Wyoming

State highway patrol received reports of a possible plane crash near Wellington after a liner with 45 passengers and five crew members, en route from San Francisco to Chicago via Salt Lake, Denver and Omaha, vanished after radioing over Cheyenne. Aged Woman Falls to Death at Salvage Yard

A 73-year-old woman, Lucy Wheat, owner of Riverside Nurseries, died after a 30-foot fall into a rocky excavation at U S Salvage Co on Fourth Street and Henshaw. She died at Memorial Hospital at 10:25 a.m. from chest injuries. Her son DeWitt Wheat and employee Coy Western were with her earlier. Western found her at the bottom. the pit was being dug for a tin press installation. Fire crews rescued her. she had been in the pit about 50 minutes. Western cited poor eyesight as a factor.

Explosion at Puriton Ordnance Plant Kills Six

An explosion in a remote building at the Puriton ordnance factory in Bridgewater England killed six men. The plant employs about 1500 workers and mainly fills shells with explosives. The blast rocked a building where gelignite is handled and shattered windows five miles away.

Fugitive Irwin Trapped In Woods After Kidnapping Case

Warren Lee Soares was cornered by New Jersey state police in a Delaware River woods. Carolyn Barker, 17, was found in a stolen car after Irwin, a 27 year old from Warrington, Pa., fled with her. Irwin, armed, and involved in prior assaults and kidnappings, fled from a Warrington home eight hours earlier and headed toward Philadelphia before continuing north. Police reported the engagement ring and wristwatch were pawned, with the FBI seeking murder and kidnapping charges. The case follows another local kidnapping in the same week.

Fire Grows on Two Fronts as Forest Blaze Is Stopped

Alpine Arizona and Luna New Mexico towns were saved after firefighters halted the western and northern fronts of the Apache National Forest blaze on Escadilla Mountain in Eastern Arizona. R B Ewing said backfires and patrols would continue to prevent flareups while rest of the 16 mile front remained uncertain. The fire has burned over 15000 acres, with 400 men on scene costing at least 50000 to control and timber/watershed damage estimated at 300000. In Pinal Mountain, near Globe Miami, 400 firefighters reported the blaze nearly under control as 4000 acres burned and 25 cottages were no longer in danger. New Mexico’s Gila fire, 30000 acres, remained out of control, exploding past barriers and heading toward Hillsboro Peak.
