A 26,475,212.28 state budget, excluding school aid but including funds to avert hospital salary reductions, was submitted to the 20th Arizona Legislature as it convened. Gov. SPRINGERVILLE June 25 AP a forest fire burned out of control destroying 2000 acres of timber 15 miles southeast near Nutrioso it was the biggest in Arizona this year. the blaze on Escadilla Mountain in Apache National Forest was fueled by high winds and extreme dryness with 100 men fighting the flames and 80 more expected by midday. forest supervisor r b ewing said it was man caused and hoped to contain it by tonight with bulldozers and heavy equipment supplied by the forest service a lumber company and a construction firm. other fires on the apache reservation were reported under control including 100 acres on Diamond Creek 15 miles northeast of white river a 60 acre blaze on upper Diamond Creek and five acres on Cottonwood Creek.
Charles E. Lane Jr., a 31 year old Phoenix chauffeur, was affirmed on appeal for the first degree murder death sentence for the slaying of his ex wife Mary Alice Johnson on February 10 1948. Convicted first at trial in January 1949 he later won a new trial and was again sentenced to death. The Arizona Supreme Court affirmed the second verdict and set August 28 as the date of execution.
