Moscow reports the Soviet Union launched a rocket toward the moon in a second soft landing attempt within a month. Luna 5 crashed on May 12, but data was gathered for future tries as Luna 6 set to test the lunar landing system.
A Senate committee approved an amendment to strike a provision from President Johnsons education bill that would have penalized districts educating many Indian children by counting certain aid ineligible for other funds. The change targets states with large Indian student populations and aligns with a House bill to permit construction of schools for American dependents in territories such as Puerto Rico.
The superior court gave 10 day suspended sentences to three public figures and refunded their bonds after city court convictions for parking meter and registration violations. Philip M. Hagerty administrative assistant Diane Blommel and Donald D. Lim appealed and were sentenced by Judge E R Thurman to suspended terms and bond refunds.
The Arizona Atomic Energy Commission offers a 280 million dollar site plan for a high energy physics laboratory near Phoenix and Tucson. Seven sites will be recommended within 40 miles of metros to meet population rules, with 2000 workers and 1000 staff using the facility.
Grants for library buildings at Arizona State University and Arizona State College Flagstaff were announced by Sen. Carl Hayden. A $649,302 grant funds ASU central library and ASC receives $183,811 for a new central library. Construction at U of A women’s residence hall also approved. project to begin within months and finish in about 14 months.
Phil Jordon, 31, ex NBA forward, was missing and presumed drowned when a homemade raft with four men broke up in the Puyallup River near Tacoma. Jordon, tall as 6-10, vanished in swift current while three companions reached shore. He played for the Knicks Royals Hawks and Pistons.
A forest ranger found the remains of a private plane missing since 1956 on a brushy slope in the Chiricahua Mountains near Douglas. The two occupants, A C Slatter of Los Angeles and Hampton Hanley of Hawthorne, were engineers for North American Aircraft. A skull and bones with a suitcase were recovered, and identification cards confirmed the men. A sheriff noted the wreckage was too damaged to warrant removal.
A Senate bill would authorize three highways across the Navajo Reservation four corners region. Routes span Bluff Utah to Mexican Water Arizona River Ridge Montezuma Creek Utah to Red Mesa Arizona and Aneth Utah to Ismay Colorado. Introduced by Sen. Wallace F Bennett Republican Utah. He cited serious neglect of the area.
A Minute Man ICBM launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base California yesterday completed an apparently successful 5000 mile flight across the Pacific Ocean test range.
Air Force investigators told Senate that a faulty bomb fuse may have caused explosions at Bein Hoa air base on May 15 16. Lt Gen William K Martin said the probe found no sabotage but continued tests. 27 Americans killed 105 wounded 12 aircraft destroyed 36 damaged.

San Francisco columnist Arthur Caylor died of cancer at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. He had written a weekday column in San Francisco for 33 years. Caylor joined the San Francisco News in 1929 after time at the Portland Telegram and taught journalism at the University of Oregon.
