Sunnyslope Woman Fends Off Intruder with Gunshot

Donna Wood, 23, shot her sister's ex-husband Donald Blabon after he forced entry at 1845 West Carol in Sunnyslope. Blabon, 25, had abducted his ex-wife and previously escaped a California sanity hearing. Blabon was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital. condition not serious.

Acheson Says Truman Forbids Discussing MacArthur Talks

Secretary Acheson testified he knows no current Korea peace talks and has been instructed by President Truman not to repeat White House discussions on the MacArthur removal. Realtor Dies In Plane Fall Near Phoenix

Milton Palmer Smith a 54 year old Phoenix realtor cotton rancher and civic leader was killed when his light plane crashed near Grand Canal. Passenger Richard H. Lund 37 suffered burns and possible rib fracture as he crawled from the wreckage. The men had taken off from Airhaven Airport en route to Smiths 3000 acre Stanfield ranch when the plane stalled at 7 30 am. Lund was hospitalized with burns to the head and legs and a left run. The crash scene near Lateral 15 and the Grand Canal prompted witnesses to rush to aid with a fire extinguisher. The two had planned a flight to the ranch in Smiths four passenger Cessna 195 before Smith switched to a smaller Aeronca Champion.

Novelist Erskine Succumbs at 71 in New York

John Erskine, 71, celebrated author and educator, died of a heart attack at his Park Avenue home. He taught at Amherst and Columbia, helped establish Western canon courses, wrote The Private Life of Helen of Troy, led Juilliard School of Music for four decades, and earned fame with Life Begins at 40.

London AP reports the Czechoslovak government sentenced three individuals to death on charges of spying for the United States. Reuters from Prague notes four others received 18 years to life terms in the crackdown.

U S Auto Output Cut Planned For July First

The United States government ordered a new auto production cut effective July 1, reducing the July-September output to about 1 200 000 cars, a drop of roughly one third from a year earlier and about 200 000 below current April-June estimates. The NPR Motor Vehicle Division director Courtney Johnson explained the revised allocation system lets manufacturers shift metal to lighter cars to raise output within the new cap.

Train Derailment Halts Nevada Rail Traffic in Elko

A Southern Pacific freight train derailed in Elko Nevada stopping rail traffic on both SP and Western Pacific lines since 2:50 p.m. yesterday. More than 30 cars left the track and no injuries were reported though the cause remains under investigation.

Van Fleet Calls Halt To Allied Offensive

United Nations forces halted their North Korea advance to pursue negotiations. Lt. Gen. James A. Van Fleet said the war entered a new phase and implied heavy Communist losses, claiming well over 100,000 enemy dead or captured in the spring offensives. He asserted the Chinese army has no chance and pledged to press home a counteroffensive if needed.

One Bomber, Perhaps Two Others Down

A bomber exploded in an aerial accident over Long Island, New York, with at least one air force plane down and reports that one or two additional aircraft may have collided with the bomber near Mitchell Field in Yaphank Suffolk County. Officials could not immediately confirm the details.

Freeze Grips North Arizona Frosts Flagstaff

North Arizona saw frost early while the state stayed cool with more seasonable weather ahead. The coldest readings were in Flagstaff from 5:10 to 6:25 a.m., but no crop damage was expected as blossoms have passed and fruit has formed in Flagstaff and Oak Creek Canyon.

Derailment Blocks Line West of Elko Nevada

Southern Pacific said a freight train derailed near Elko Nevada around midnight blocking the line for an estimated 10 to 12 hours. Local officers had no further information.

Learn to Swim Program Opens Across Phoenix Area

The 25th annual Learn-to-Swim program starts Monday offering free lessons for children up to 14 at 18 pools in Phoenix, Litchfield, Sunnyslope, and Avondale. Lessons run 9 to 11 am in Phoenix area pools and 10 am to noon in Avondale for five days, led by Red Cross and YMCA instructors. Participants must pass a health check for access to YWCA pools.
