Myer Defends Caution Over Freeing Tribes
Indian Commissioner Myer says tribes will be freed from government supervision once capable of self management and does not expect full withdrawal during his lifetime. He warned against a Washington master plan and urged locally developed programs in consultation with Indians to avoid past land losses and hardships. He criticized what he called perversions of the truth by tribal groups and reiterated continued review of attorney contracts as protection against exploitation.
