Brush Fire Rages Across Mazatzal Watershed
Special to The Gazette Roosevelt July 20 Fueled by lightning a brush and grass fire has burned about 400 acres of watershed lands north of here in the Mazatzal mountains. Firefighters including 150 men 40 National Guardsmen from Mesa and Globe and trained Indian reinforcements are on the lines as wind conditions may ease tonight. The blaze threatens Buck Basin and reaches Denton Ridge near Tonto Basin fueling water supply concerns for Roosevelt Lake. The 1947 Four Peaks fire burned 3000 acres in the same area and warned officials to prevent further damage.

Crop Duster Killed As Wires Snag Plane West of Buckeye
James Ward, 27, of Buckeye Crop Dusting Service, died when his light plane struck a utility pole after the undercarriage tangled with wires crossing a field on the Lee Theron Faver ranch seven miles west of Buckeye. Ward, married to Clare, had trained at Williams AFB and Marsh Aviation in Phoenix. Funeral arrangements were set at Mercer Mortuary. This season’s Buckeye fatality marks the first crop duster death in the district, with three other statewide crashes in two weeks including Yuma Airport manager Lawrence Spain and Phoenix pilot Clyde Hack.

Arizona Tax Rate For 1951 To Be Near $1
The 1951 state tax rate will run between 90 cents and $1 per $1 valuation, with a reduction of 55 cents from last year. The substantial surplus in the general fund, about $6.24 million, and higher collections of income and sales taxes supported the lowered rate. For 1951-52, the state's general fund needs are projected at about $34.5 million, including $12 million for schools and $2 million for building and land-purchase funding, aiming to stabilize the rate near $1. The legislature earmarked $1.5 million for land purchases and $500,000 for the state hospital, shifting funds into a future budget. Phoenician Is Rescued From Sea
Lt. (jg) Robert L. Scott of Phoenix Arizona was rescued after his fighter plane crashed into the Mediterranean while flying from the carrier Oriskany. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Scott, own Suncrest Hereford Ranch and are vacationing in Europe. A WFM source notes another Scott son, a navy flier, was killed in World War II. Rescue planes directed Salem to the raft.

Power Outage Hits Indian School Area After Collision
A motorist backing into a power pole on Montebello and Seventh Street caused lines to whip together cutting electric service for nearly an hour along Indian School Road between Seventh and 24th Streets. Service was restored at 8 59 p.m. after Calapco crews rerouted around the open circuit twice and finally repaired the line. Officials noted the heavy load of cooler motors caused the breakers to trip and urged turning off air and cooler motors during breaks to speed restoration.
