Arizona Welfare Costs Lie Ahead of National Averages
The welfare commissioner reported 1950-51 outlays exceeded the prior year with total welfare costs of 14,223,500. Old age assistance declined by 384 cases over four months, dependent children fell 641, aid to the blind 65, and general assistance 228 as Arizona shifts to new state limits on ownership and grant income. The state contends federal funds cover most Indian welfare, while relations with the U S Bureau of Indian Affairs shift toward full state responsibility. Despite cuts, Arizona remains high in per capita payments, averaging 51 dollars for old age checks, 76 for dependent children, 57 for aid to blind, and 41 for general assistance.
