Markets, morals, and a skiing club in a town tale

A reflection on the late era of mistrust toward finance and regulation accompanies a local tale of Gene Tompane and a teenage ski club. Students invest ten thousand dollars in stocks as a school project and, under guidance, see 7 to 8 percent dividends and 5 to 25 percent gains, highlighting core financial functions and the danger of attacking markets. The piece notes how fears of banks and traders influenced teaching and public opinion, urging respect for solid American institutions.

The Phoenix Gazette editorial urging Arizonans to write editors of outside newspapers for support of the Central Arizona Project wins praise from Howard J. He notes CAP will yield about 3% billions in US tax benefits over 75 years and accuses California papers of bias against Basin programs while praising Arizona press coverage.
