Winning Contract in Notrump May Beat Four Spades
In a bridge puzzle with neither side vulnerable, North holds four spades with weak side suits. The recommended bid is three notrump to reach a nine trick game, avoiding a slam that cannot guarantee four spades. With two stoppers in every suit, six spades plus top hearts clubs ensures at least six tricks, while best defense yields at most four tricks.
