Floods Press Midwest as River Walls Strain
The Wabash flood wall near Vincennes faced high water as 400 volunteers worked through the night to place sandbags. Across four states thousands fled homes along the Lower Mississippi and Ohio valleys, with Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee reporting widespread displacement and crop damage. A new fast-moving storm brought winds and snow to the Central Great Plains and upper Midwest, with record cold blizzards in several northern states. The Ohio and Mississippi rivers rose in Cairo and Rossville while levees along the Mississippi were strengthened.
