Nabbed After Giving Inquest Testimony
A deputy sheriff near Ashfork captured a man and woman wanted for kidnapping Kingman constable Walter Black. Polly Bennett and Lloyd Joiner, from Texas, were identified during an inquest into Miss Elizabeth Lee's death, near Ashfork. They face kidnapping and grand theft charges, with federal car theft charges filed. Black was bound briefly but escaped unharmed. Police found a .38 revolver on Joiner and a concealed constable’s car nearby.

Mendon Mass January 11 an heroic police chief Matthew Mantoni age 39 and a 22 year old cafe patron Catherine Brady were killed during a three hour roadhouse siege by a drunken gunman Harold Ward 32 also wounded nine others including waitress Miss Josephine Pitassi and Miss Brady s escort Laurence Griffin. Ward held up the Red Rooster cafe forcing owner William Hensel and others at gunpoint and demanded $150 from a safe. Chief Mantoni shot Ward in the hip as Ward faltered then Ward was felled by the chief and disarmed by Patrolman Clarence Grant. Ward later died or was killed as police continued the counterattack.
