Chinese Nationalist gunboats shelled the American freighter Flying Arrow off Shanghai with 30 to 40 hits. No crew casualties among 43 and 12 passengers. The ship was detained by Chinese Nationalist warships after shelling as flotilla guarded Red-held Shanghai. Fires raged aboard the freighter before rescue efforts.
In a second large stoppage within two weeks, more than 47,000 soft coal miners in Pennsylvania West Virginia Ohio Kentucky and Alabama refused to enter pits. Pitt Consol and U S Steel pits closed while UMW leader John L Lewis urged limited work. Officials offered little comment as miners cited no contract in effect or other reasons for staying away.
Wayne Richardson, 51, AP correspondent aboard the Flying Arrow, left Hong Kong and encountered danger near the Yangtze River as Nationalist warships shelled the vessel, rendering it seaworthy. Richardson, Hong Kong AP correspondent for four years, previously edited the Phoenix AP office for two decades. His wife Margaret has returned from the Far East and stays with her mother in Phoenix.
The Flying Arrow was shelled near Shanghai while en route with a $10,000,000 cargo loaded in Hong Kong. Part of the cargo was dumped overboard after fires started. Capt. David Jones of Chicago deemed the ship unseaworthy after inspecting shell holes. Isbrandtsen Line of New York sought U.S. State Department help for safe passage to Shanghai for repairs. Isbrandtsen urged U.S. naval protection, calling the shelling unlawful.

A Continental Dixie bus traveling from Shreveport to Dallas hit a power pole just after 6 am injuring 19 passengers none of them seriously. The most seriously hurt was John L. Ford who suffered a fractured ankle. Driver Wayne M. McBride declined to speak to reporters. A witness said two cars were racing and Mc Bride swerved to avoid a collision.
Sixty four persons including 17 children died in weekend fires across the United States and Canada. The Davenport Iowa Mercy Hospital ward blaze killed 40 women while Maine and other fires claimed children and adults, with several families left homeless. The incidents spanned Quebec New York Ohio Indiana Virginia Michigan and Ontario with numerous deaths and injuries.
United Mine Workers chief John L. Lewis denounces Senator Robert A. Taft as a "flamboyant oppressor of the poor" while Midwest coal dealers urge congressional action. Taft advocates using the Taft Hartley Law 80 day injunction to end the reduced mine production. Coal merchants from several cities warn of fuel shortages if miners do not return to full schedules.
The westbound Overland Limited with 300 aboard stalled for hours in a blizzard after colliding with an automobile near Donner Summit. An emergency stop caused a dining car coupling to snap, passengers moved to forward cars for heat, and driver George Knowles 55 Sacramento suffered cuts. Fifteen year old Eddie Stone was saved from a ledge in the Catalina Mountains at 1:54 a.m. by about two dozen Pima County sheriffs officers after a long dark rescue. He was uninjured. The group including Edwin Stone and three companions had slipped during a mine site inspection. Others named were Michael McCarty Lee W Epperson and Jack Schwinger. The hiking party requested sheriff help after failing to reach him.
At Buena Vista Colorado 180 inmates of the State Reformatory for Boys were fed from National Guard field kitchens after a fire damaged the dining hall kitchen and gymnasium building. Warden James S Thomas cited wiring as the likely cause with damages about 175000 dollars. Firefighters from the reformatory and nearby towns contained the blaze.
Prime Minister Attlee may announce Britain's general election by Wednesday. London political writers speculate the vote could be held February 2 or February 22.
In Hong Kong on January 9, six to seven Chinese gunmen robbed the Chase National Bank branch, taking about 195000 Hong Kong dollars and 3000 U.S. dollars. American manager Frank A. Howard said the $33,000 U.S. equivalent loss was insured. The six to seven attackers entered near 3 p.m., disarmed a guard, and fled into crowds despite police being summoned.
In Modena Italy police and strikers clashed as a general strike by CGIL ties escalated. Five workers were killed and 10 wounded amid the dispute over a steel plant closure and failed negotiations with steel workers. CGIL reported the fatalities and called an emergency Executive Committee session to decide on further action.
A two alarm blaze at a three story San Francisco multiple dwelling on Van Ness Avenue forced 26 residents to flee in nightclothes. Fire officials say the fire started from a defective gas vent on the first floor and spread through walls and floors to the second story. Firemen suffered minor cuts and bruises while subduing the flames.
