Seamen Quit Shanghai Bound Flying Arrow Crew Refuses Blockade
Nine American seamen and two officers abandon the Isbrandtsen Line freighter Flying Arrow rather than pass through the Nationalist blockade to Communist Shanghai. The ship, carrying nearly 6,000 tons of cargo, was due to sail at 8 a.m. but some crew feared they could not afford return passage. US consulate and Isbrandtsen officials arranged compensation. One seaman cited family needs as a reason to stay.
