ARIZONA'S PROGRESSIVE NEWSPAPER reports widow perishes in local fire. John Maragon, former bootblack with White House access, indicted on four counts of perjury by federal grand jury. Charges stem from statements to Senate investigators about government contracts and personal finances.
AAP report details a winter storm sweeping from Southern California to Northwestern Illinois with blizzard conditions in Utah and the Dakotas. Temperatures plunged below zero in Montana and parts of the West, with widespread snow, icy roads, and multiple weather warnings as a new storm began forming in the Central Rockies.
A Phoenix woman aged about 55 died from smoke and flames at 845 North Sixth Avenue. Neighbors alerted firefighters who arrived at 6:35 a.m. to find Elsie Lightner unconscious in the kitchen. She was pronounced dead at St Monica's Hospital. Fire officials said she woke, discovered the fire in her bedroom, poured water into a tub, soaked a bathrobe, and was dressed in a nightgown when found. The blaze confined to the bedroom and a hallway. other units were undamaged. Lightner was a member of the Lake Greenway Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. a son, Lt. Col. Jeff Clark, was in California.
Fred Stroble, 67, goes on trial in Los Angeles on charges he murdered 6 year old Linda Joyce Glacof t. Stroble confessed to torture slaying and pleads innocent or insanity. He seeks leniency after stating he does not deserve to live. Linda’s body was found on a rubbish pile in the rear yard of the baker’s son in law.
Marilyne Holdren, 13, Mesa Union High freshman, named 1950 Salad Bowl queen during half time at the Xavier–ASU Tempe game. She will tour New York with expenses paid by the Phoenix Kiwanis Club. The event drew about 18,500 attendees and, after expenses,至少 10,000 will be distributed to Kiwanis clubs for handicapped children.
About 7,000 Illinois coal miners refused to return to work as the UMW strike rumors faded nationwide. In Illinois areas West Frankfort Taylorville Springfield Canton roughly 7,000 idle, 4,000 in Taylorville Springfield region, 1,500 at West Frankfort, 1,500 in Canton strip mines. Elsewhere, West Virginia and Pennsylvania led the overall return as industry observers cited unfair labor practice charges against Lewis as a factor in the Illinois action.
In February and March the 80,000 U S fighting men will take part in Exercise Portrex the largest peacetime airborne amphibious war games. About 150 ships and 650 planes will operate in the Caribbean area culminating with an airborne amphibious attack on Vieques Puerto Rico led mainly by Army troops from Fort Benning and Fort Devens. Marines will not participate in the amphibious phase due to lift limits but will train Army units at Little Creek and Camp Pickett while some Marines serve as umpires and aerial support comes from the Second Marine Air Wing.
