British Labor leaders urged voters to cast ballots despite rain in London and key centers. With possible record morning turnout, rain risked hurting Labor's bid to extend socialism or shift to Churchill's Conservatives. Headquarters called for redoubled efforts to mobilize supporters before closing time.
The CIO Communications Workers of America accepted President Truman’s appeal for a 60 day bargaining truce to keep telephone service uninterrupted. Beirne said workers would bargain around the clock to settle the dispute, with Bell System firms and Western Electric signaling a willingness to continue talks. The Southern Bell line suggested the truce run through June 5 as 100,000 workers planned a strike at 6 am tomorrow and 120,000 more set to join on March 1.
In Asmara Eritrea police killed two rioters raising the death toll to 32 since the Moslem Christian feud began Monday. Arson and looting flared in the native quarter as clashes continued this week.
The Special Legislative Committee on State Operations recommended immediate consideration of establishing a state department of health welfare and correction as the first major step in reorganizing state government. The proposal would abolish the State Board of Public Health.
The Special Legislative Committee on State Operations backed a $20,000 appropriation for a comprehensive study of the state tax structure. Griffenhagen and Associates, which previously surveyed state government for the panel, would conduct the survey for the sum.
A recommendation proposes abolishing existing boards governing the State Hospital for the Insane Fort Grant Boys Industrial School and pardons and paroles. Their duties would move to a new health welfare and correction department which would include the State Prison Pioneers’ Home State Bureau of Criminal Identification Arizona Children’s Colony and the Veterans’ Relief Commission. The committee submitted the proposal to the Legislature for immediate consideration.
A miniature parade at the Maricopa County Fair in Mesa will feature over 100 decorated floats with citrus themes. Divided into commercial and non commercial divisions, prizes total 50 dollars per division. Bands, clowns, Indians, a Ford trick car, and a world champion rider join the event. Special guests include 25 crippled children. parade forms at Main and Morris streets then proceeds along Main to Shrine and First street. Attendance at the George Washington holiday fair rose to 5 059 yesterday with 21 781 paid admissions in five days.
Iowans gathered at Encanto Park on Washington's birthday for the annual Iowa picnic where 1950 attendees heard that their senior senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper voted against the Central Arizona Project, a motion carried 55 to 28. Robert H. Renaud urged contacting Iowa congressmen to press for Arizona's case. Principal speaker Dr. J. C. Norton recalled the event's history. Officers of the Iowa Society of Arizona were elected: Roy Border president, Alex Roschke first VP, Ed Kellum second VP, E. F. Howard secretary, Hazel Davis treasurer.

Six hooded robbers invaded the home of 93 year old William G. Mather in Cleveland taking jewelry valued at 350000. Mrs Mather was struck and a nurse bound as the thieves seized three diamond necklaces a pearl necklace a diamond pin a ruby and diamond pendant a sapphire and diamond ring a butterfly diamond brooch and two diamond earrings. Police expected to solve the case with the sentimental items recovered.
Washington Feb 23 A House vote 240 177 passed a Fair Employment Practices Commission bill stripped of enforcement powers. The measure, replacing Truman’s mandatory civil rights plan, creates a five member panel to study educate and recommend with no district binding. Debate showed deep party and regional splits over race discrimination policy.
The House Un American Activities Committee heard testimony that Communists may seek to extend the coal strike by backing miners. FBI informant Matthew Cvetic said he was told 50 youth leaders were brought from New York for “work in the coal fields” and distributed food as bait while circulating The Daily Worker. He named Bill Gordon as a Communist organizer and noted the 50 are said to be Labor Youth League members. Cvetic, a former FBI agent, testified on seven years in the Communist Party in Western Pennsylvania and warned of a potential war against the U.S. government. He said WLOA radio in Braddock, Pa., aired scripts by Communist leaders, though station managers were not believed to be Reds. Communist leader Steve Nelson described the United States as “the enemy.”

Manchester Feb 23 AP Dr Hermann N Sander's chief defense lawyer said the country doctor will show the cancer ridden woman he is accused of killing was dead before he injected air into her veins. Louis E Wyman hinted at the defense after the prosecution said Sander admitted taking the life of Mrs Abbie Borreto 59. The case centers on whether mercy killing occurred as Mrs Borreto died at Hillsboro County Hospital Dec 4 after losing weight from 140 to 80 pounds. The defense plans to prove she was already dead before injections.
