A crowded Long Island Railroad commuter train ran through a stop signal and collided head on with another, killing 29 and injuring 100 near Rockville Centre New York. Motorman Jacob Kiefer 55 of Baldwin North Carolina was arrested for second degree manslaughter as the disaster prompted a major inquiry. The accident, Metropolitan New York's worst in four years, occurred on a gauntlet siding used during grade-crossing work. Police reported many victims in critical condition and the majority of casualties were from the metropolitan area.
