SIMMESPORT La Aug 10 AP A head on collision between a 300 marine troop train and a passenger train killed at least five people with reports fluctuating. The Southern Belle bound for New Orleans and the troop train to San Diego derailed in a swamp area about 60 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. Many injured were taken to area hospitals as flames from derailed diesels burned.
North Central cool air eases heat across parts of Texas Oklahoma and Kansas though forecasters warn relief will be temporary. The Texas heat left 17 deaths in two weeks with Midland and Presidio among the hardest hit as storms, heavy rain and high winds disrupted towns and transport. High temperatures topped 100 and Midland faced power and road disruptions while Calumet and Duluth saw cooler readings elsewhere across the nation.

Dr Edward A Condon resigns as director of the National Bureau of Standards effective Sept 30. President Truman accepts the resignation with regret noting Condon served in a critical position with loyal attention. Condon leaves a $14000 yearly salary to join private industry after a career as a physicist and atomic energy expert including work with Westinghouse and government service since 1945.
In Florence Arizona an air ground search is under way after a parachute and red rocket flare were seen three miles south of town last night. A 11 by 8 to 11 mile area extending from the outskirts was combed by a 10 man posse aided by a private plane. No trace of the parachute was found by 5:30 today.
A loaded logging truck fell 600 feet off a rim near Baker's Butte 80 miles south of Flagstaff. The crushed gasoline tank ignited a forest fire that burned about four acres. Ten men fought the blaze. the driver escaped with minor injuries after abandoning the vehicle when brakes failed. The rim marks the boundary between Coconino and Tonto forests.
Phelps Dodge Corp reports an estimated six month net income of 21,156,559 or 4.17 a share, compared with 16,898,491 or 3.33 a share a year earlier. Sales totaled 141,059,244 versus 105,909,107 in 1950, with taxes rising to 30,300,000 from 9,800,000.
