Luke Air Force Base reports a seven man ground rescue party reached a flood stranded car near Liberty nine miles south of town but found Emma D. Ray wife of Staff Sgt. Lawrence H. Ray and their 17 year old son Paul had left the vehicle. The sergeant had returned with the team and stayed with the truck and driver while the occupants reportedly went to a ranch two miles away. A plane dropped notes to the ranch and waved acknowledgement. The family had been stranded since flood waters from Waterman Wash blocked the road. The first mission for the newly formed group took more than six hours to reach the car through mud debris and sand.

Holbrook authorities seek motive and suspect in the July 22 killing of Bert Fiefield. A youth held by Camp Crowder MP near Carthage is identified as Pfc. Donald L. Ball 19 AWOL from Luke AFB Arizona. He reportedly recalled hurting or killing a man on a trip through Arizona. Ball joined Michigan National Guard earlier this year.
