United Nations forces shell the Seoul front with tanks and infantry as Chinese and Red Army troops mass for a possible May Day assault. More than 400 UN guns and hundreds of Allied planes bombard targets while Reds rush reinforcements into a siege arc from the Han River to the Pukhan.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson told the U S Chamber of Commerce that the United States must meet and repel the enemy in Korea while avoiding a major commitment of forces against Soviet satellites. He defended UN intervention and rejected more aggressive measures urged by MacArthur supporters. Senator Taft was to respond from the same platform later.
Bandits and burglars sought after more than $4000 in cash jewelry and guns in two robberies and five burglaries across the area. Targets included Gioia Incorporated at 909 East McDowell Road and Worth's Sporting Goods at 41 South Macdonald Street. A cafe robbery and home burglaries added to the spree.
Detectives investigated illegal drinking parties at a Green's Motel cottage at 1741 West Van Buren Street where about 10 girls and seven men fled as officers entered. A 21-year-old woman was arrested for general investigation and concealing a weapon after a blackjack was found. A 16-year-old girl who fled from the cabin was later located at home. Military personnel allegedly supplied beer to juveniles. Police also stopped youths near Fifth and Jefferson and near 3200 West Van Buren Street, where a cap pistol was mistaken for a revolver. Five 16-year-old boys were later placed in the County Detention Home after two loudspeakers were recovered from the Twin Drive-In Theater.
Former President Herbert Hoover urged dissolving the Reconstruction Finance Corporation saying its purpose is submerged in backing risky business. He testified before the Senate Banking Committee detailing favoritism and corruption, and suggested small business loans be handled by Federal Reserve Banks.
Vice President Alben W Barkley received sustained applause as he praised President Truman and urged world peace at the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner Ralph Watkins, general chairman, reported 1849 attendees with delegates from all 14 counties. Barkley credited the Truman doctrine the Marshall Plan and the Atlantic Pact for halting communism in Europe and called for decisive leadership against Korea.
President Truman sent Congress a 60.68 billion dollar defense budget for the next fiscal year and urged rapid buildup of ground sea and air forces. He warned the Soviet Union has pushed the world to the brink of general war and said the free world must be ready to stop and strike back decisively. The plan outlines 18 Army divisions 1161 Navy ships 25 Marine divisions and 95 Air Force wings with heavy equipment including ships planes tanks and missiles.
Senate Democratic Leader McFarland said after a White House briefing that the Korea situation didn’t look so black. He noted withdrawals seemed orderly, as he joined Speaker Rayburn, House Democratic Leader McCormack, and Sen Johnson in a stretch of the morning briefing on the Communist offensive in Korea.
In Barbert on Ohio, an Ohio National Guard tank moved into the path of a speeding Erie passenger train. Three of the tank crew were killed, one injured. Six train passengers were injured, none seriously.

American businessman Robert A. Vogeler and his family left Vienna today for the United States after 17 months in a Budapest prison. He was released on Saturday and traveled with his wife Lucille and two children, Bobby and Billy, with Austrian police and U.S. Army guards nearby. Vogeler, 39, suffered isolation and stress but his doctors said no permanent damage occurred as he prepared to return home.
Gen. and Mrs. Douglas MacArthur flew from Idlewild Airport to Murfreesboro Tennessee for a visit to Mrs MacArthur’s hometown. They traveled with son Arthur aged 13 aboard the Constellation Bataan. He marked their 14th wedding anniversary with a public phrase about a new honeymoon.
Senate crime investigators revised a 200 page underworld study after newsmen knew its recommendations. Kefauver said a galley proof was stolen and called the incident unfortunate while noting no blame toward columnist Robert S. Allen. The panel would not pull punches on law enforcement in several cities.
The National Headliners Club honors C. G. Werner for consistently outstanding editorial cartoons. Werner, whose drawings appear in The Gazette, is on the staff of The Indianapolis Star, and one of his cartoons appears today on Page 6.
French Army communique reports the capture of Myduc tay, a key Viet Minh base about 60 miles southwest of Saigon, Indochina, on April 30 according to AP.
Richard D. Searles of Scottsdale Arizona was sworn in today as under secretary of interior the post vacant since December 1949. The oath was given by Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas. Searles 45 recently left as president of Salt River Valley Water Users Association and has served as Arizona state treasurer for the Democratic Committee and as a former Arizona legislator.
Winter clung to Arizona with Flagstaff reporting nine inches of snow on the ground and nearby areas seeing snow in the hills. Rain totals measured across the watershed sites varied, Phoenix recorded light precipitation, and strong winds kept temperatures unseasonably low while dust coated houses and cars.
Senator Sparkman said the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees will initially hear Gen Douglas MacArthur and administration spokesmen in closed sessions, with the possibility of later open sessions. The remarks reflect a phased approach to testimony on defense and foreign policy.
The annual Learn-to-Swim program announced by The Phoenix Gazette YMCA and American Red Cross lists sessions in Glendale Tempe Buckeye Mesa Clendale Peoria Litchfield Park and other county pools. Free beginner instruction for ages 8 to 14 runs May 28 to June 1 in some cities and June 11 to 15 in others with June 4 to 8 sessions at Litchfield Park.
