Midland Red Cross sale totals and event notes

The Midland Red Cross sale realized 44400, not 6300, with a winner drawn at the Gem theatre in Philip. A celebration and sale are planned for the Milesville Branch on July 4, and various branches held dances and suppers to support Red Cross efforts. War fund drive progress is mixed, with many branches reporting funds raised against allotments and Dr. Barksdale overseeing the campaign for Minneapolis headquarters.

Socialist Candidates Indicted Under Espionage Act Set for Pierre

Fred Fairchild and Orville Anderson of Haakon county pleaded not guilty as their cases were scheduled for the Pierre term opening June 11. Indicted for uttering disloyal remarks obstructing enlistment and interfering with draft and Liberty Loan sales, they are connected to the socialist ticket. Seymour Steadman, socialist attorney, to defend them after recently handling Ruth Pastor Stokes in Denver.

Ordnance Equipment Ready for Soldiers for France

The Army Ordnance Department reports it has met overseas shipment demands for American troops. Infantrymen are issued modified Enfield rifles with full field gear. Artillery and machine guns are in France, with adequate supplies for present needs. Prohibition nears, aiding Liberty Bond purchases as South Dakotans support war measures. Tax revenue from traffic is noted but the paragraph ends abruptly.

Haakon county stockrainers face 3000 calf losses from preventable abortion. cattle owners must cleanse herds to protect beef prices.

Red Cross Dance and Supper at Nowlin Net Proceeds

Nowlin hosted a Red Cross dance and supper last Friday evening raising 114 dollars. Local events included a Bluejay supper planned for next Friday, school notes from Pleasant View and Fort Pierre, market reports on cattle, and residents visiting relatives in Port Pierre and Philip.
