Scotty Philip Dies at Fort Pierre Ranch
James Philip known as Scotty died Sunday morning at seven at his ranch six miles north of Fort Pierre from a ruptured brain blood vessel. Born in Morayshire Scotland on April 30 1830 he emigrated to the United States, worked as a cowboy and cattleman, served in the quartermaster corps, and built a major cattle business in Stanley County. He organized the Minnesota and Dakota cattle company, owned a vast buffalo herd, engaged in mercantile and banking interests, and was a state senator and county commissioner. He leaves a wife two sons and three daughters. funeral held at the family home with Masonic rites.
