In a tense moment Orde confronts a gambler over a pasted card. He urges Tim to assemble the crowd and prepare a quick exit, warning of danger and recalling a thousand dollars on his person.
In a dusty parlor Newmark, a sharp schemer, meets Jack Orde, a seasoned log driver. They discuss forming a stock company to organize river driving with piers booms and fewer men to cut costs and increase profits.
Orde tells his mother he will marry Carroll Bishop from Jane Hubbard's Sunday gathering. He imagines river crew life and a business plan with Daly, Monrovia, and sorting booms, debating costs, profits, and travel timing as family and neighbors eavesdrop. He agrees to pursue the venture after leaving Daly midweek.
Orde resolves to join Newmark in a risky business venture saying he will risk his reputation. Newmark explains his background as a New York broker with a legacy fortune, and notes he has 20 000 dollars to invest. They discuss a rough plan and a key client, Daly, with costs for delivery and production obligations hinted.
Orde and Newmark lay plans for a winter log drive using river tolls. Orde interviews Daly and others to secure contracts for driving and distributing logs. They discuss bottlenecks like rollways and the need to ship via river deliveries, while Heinzman and Proctor weigh in on the venture.
