Tolstoi and the Era of Brotherhood in Bryan tribute

The piece recalls Tolstoi as a pioneering apostle of love who, born to aristocracy, found a deeper purpose after forty. He opposed privilege, preached loving God and neighbor, and for thirty years challenged former social circles with messages of universal love.

Three Weddings at Kirley Home in Stanley County

On November 13 a triple wedding occurred at Jo seph B Kirley’s Stanley County home. Joy Kirley wed Bessie Wrightman, Ralph Wrightman married Lucia Kirley, and Arthur Wrightman wed Ina Kirley, with Rev Mueller of Pierre officiating. The couples plan to settle near Orton. The Kirley family, early Pierre settlers, previously ran a ferry and later lived near Rousseau. Dozens of friends offered best wishes as the marriages were celebrated despite the odd notes about Marie Welch of Watertown and a village chicken tradition.

Demand for School Teacher and Ranch Feud Arrests

Two Merrifield boys aged 13 and 16 were arrested near the family home on a stealing charge. Principal M. M. Edwards, longtime country schoolteacher near Weta, is at large with a $50 reward. Edwards allegedly aided the boys in stealing a mare from Gilbert Dock ranch and delivering it to the Merrifield claim. The case ties to a broader local feud and a separate arrest of Sonnenschein, a 34 year old ranchman and politician, with police seeking details on charges while he deflects blame to Briggs in a prior knife incident.

Rancher Herman Sonnenschein Arrest Shocks Pierre

Herman Sonnenschein a wealthy ranch owner and stockman from Pierre South Dakota was arrested in Sioux City while en route to Chicago with cattle. The Journal reports he allegedly included a neighbor’s steer in a shipment and sold it for profit. Local residents doubt the charge, noting long-standing ties to the community and a past dispute over county sheriff race and Indian lands leasing. A bond of 1500 was signed by local business figures as a precaution.
