Amos Scott leads a bold campaign for a colored magistrate seat in Philadelphia as activists recount past attempts by Mossell. The piece praises Scott’s organization from League Island to Overbrook with widespread visible support among colored and white residents and urges turnout at primaries.
The John W. Hines firm at 7th and Bainbridge streets with manager Thomas Francis has secured a $1200 contract to make costumes for the Smarter Set Company.
Corporal Leander G. Biackus, a local man raised in St Thomas P E Church, has accepted a position as head of Agriculture at the A and T College in Greensboro North Carolina. He has long served as a Sunday School worker and acolyte and community pride surrounds his new role.
Charles Buttle of 2641 Annin Ave was shot July 18 1918 during city race riots by policeman James Raglin of 716 8 Colorado St. He died at Polyclinic Hospital on Monday Raglin is held without bail.
In Bron, New Jersey, Mrs. Jace Woodson jailed William Johnson for breach of promise then secured a marriage license and offered freedom in exchange for marriage. Johnson agreed and the ceremony was performed.
Webb Jefferies of North 21st Street is held without bail for stabbing his wife nineteen times when she came home late. She lies in serious condition at the Women s Homeopathic Hospital.
Norfolk Va Sept 1 African Methodists marked three centuries of progress at the tercentenary service at St John A M E Church held Wednesday. Rev M H Davis of Baltimore spoke on The Christian Church. Bishop J Albert Johnson, with 45 years in the ministry, received a purse of 810.00
The Letter Carriers convention denounced Postmaster-General Burleson blaming him for postal service inefficiency. James Forrester of Toledo urged retirement of Burleson, calling him autocrat and disgrace. Congressman Henry Goldfogle noted delays showing mismanagement, citing a twelve day delivery from Washington to Cleveland.
In Austin Texas Sept 10 two thousand colored and 100 white persons met to discuss the race question described as acute by speakers. The gathering opened with a resolution from the St Johns Missionary Colored Baptist Association executive board opposing North intermeddling and urging local and state help to ease race tensions. The preamble denounced inflammatory publications and warned magazines urging negroes into political positions risked race riots and bloodshed in the South.
In McRae Georgia on September 8 legal steps will be taken to remove Sheriff Williams from office over the May lynching of Berry, an elderly colored man. The Circuit Superior Court Solicitor General will file the action next month following a special Grand Jury report finding negligence in not protecting the prisoner.
The Lincoln League of America executive committee plans its first convention from February 11 to 11, 1920, in Chicago Illinois. Events include Labor and Business Day Political Emancipation Day Woman's Day and American Day with colored soldiers in charge. Notables include Governor Lowden and Mayor Thompson.
A 90 degree Sunday crowd at the Olympia Theatre heard Col A Dennison cancel speaking duties while Col fs addressed. Dean Pickens urged the race not be sold out as funds sought reach about $50,000 with nearly $6,000 raised.
William Anthony Aery reports a four day rural preachers institute at Bettis Academy near Tren ton D C led by Dr James Hardy Dillard and a team of white and colored workers. Despite heavy rains over a clay road region with many bridges, one hundred seventy five preachers enrolled and many attended the full session credits go to Alfred W Nicholson Bettie Academy president and a large cooperative committee.
Madden pushes abolition of Jim Crow cars before the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee urging equal rights on trains. He argues the government has no right to deny citizens equal treatment, while opponents note regional disparities and urge uniform rules across the nation.

Roscoe Simmons spoke to thousands on Labor Day in New Orleans endorsing the Lincoln League of America and drawing wide press attention. The Lincoln League convention was postponed to February 12, 1920, and $2500 was raised by locals under Thomas P. Wood land for the league. Simmons questioned racial equality and schooling in a controversial remark about friendship and voting rights.
A Sunday morning crowd at a church near 19th District police arrested James Douglass of 3722 Brown Street after a pistol discharged. Victim Thomas Sprouse of 1947 Wilder Street was shot below the groin and treated at Douglass Hospital. Douglass posted $5000 bail, arranged by Dr. Cohen.
Ned Harris and Jack Cantrell of 8 List street exchanged gunfire after a quarrel over a woman in Elmwood. Cantrell was shot in the eye and Harris in the abdomen. both were taken to University Hospital in serious condition and not expected to live.
Seven thousand spectators watched color games dances and singing by children at McCoach Recreation Center on Allies Day September 3. Rain earlier in the day recalled wartime memories as King David Band and Meadowbrook sprinter Joe Rainey led events including dashes 50 100 and 220 yards and the half mile relay.
The General Education Board announces expansion of cooperative work in the South to Texas and South Carolina. A field agent will oversee colored rural schools in Texas while a rural school inspector will serve South Carolina.
Hilldale and the Bacharach Giants played at Shibe Park marking the first history making colored teams to appear there. The park with a 23900 capacity is a rare major league venue.

Jesse Washington a New York based actor with Fox Corporation drowned during a film scene on the deck of the submarine R-1 at Newport Harbor. He and John O'Brien fought as the submarine was to sink, but only Washington went missing after a search failed to locate his body. Washington had worked for Fox for some time and married two weeks earlier.
Baltimore September 10 Cardinal Gibbons has called a bishops conference to examine why educating priests for colored missions is waning. The Josephite Society runs the program, with fewer than a hundred trained in the last twenty five years. Prejudice and the departure of William N Floyd to Canada highlight the shortage. Only three colored priests have trained under Josephite auspices, and a prominent layman urges training more colored priests.
Community invites public support for a total 106000 rally planned at Mother Gethel A M E Church on 6th street below Pine. Event slated for Sunday October 12 1919 with organizers urging wide participation.
The American Legion constitution allows all war veterans to join regardless of race. States may decide if posts are white only, colored only, or mixed with state approval. Pennsylvania has sanctioned colored posts, and new colored posts have formed in the state.
At McCoach playground on Tuesday September 9, over five hundred attendees witnessed Post 97 of the American Legion receive a handsome silk flag. Presented by the 20th Ward Republican Club and the 27th Draft Board of South Philadelphia, this marks the first colors for a colored post in the city.
Our well known townsman Lawyer G Edward Dickerson again leads in self expression for colored residents who make up about one twelfth of Philadelphia. He seeks representation in the Legislature and a 21 member City Council covering wards from Market Street north to the Schuylkill and east to the Delaware. For 15 years he has stood for equal rights, defended victims in riots and supported his people through threats, praise his tireless service and calls for loyal support from those who share in his struggle.
New York News editor Geo W Harris is chosen to head the state committee of colored citizens for the Roosevelt Memorial Association. Other members include Chas H Anderson Rev W H Brooks Gilchrist Stewart and J W Thompson of Rochester.
Miss Rossa B. Cooley, principal of Penn Normal School at St Helena 8 C, laments the lack of Black representation in Paris Victory Parade. She argues 200000 Negroes served in France and many gave their lives, urging whites and Blacks to understand each other and honor Black contributions to World War I.
