Conviction of Theatre Manager for Color Discrimination
Camp Funston, Kansas May 15 The prosecution of a theatre manager in Manhattan Kansas for discrimination against a sergeant of the 92nd Division ended in conviction with a fine of 10 dollars and costs. General Ballou had urged the prosecution and defended the action as maintaining good order and preventing race trouble.

Colored ship worker breaks record at Sparrows Point
In Baltimore May 17 a gang of colored riveters at Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point broke the world rivet driving record. Charles Knight drove 4875 rivets in a nine hour day, surpassing the 4442 mark in a Scottish shipyard. The feat garners praise for patriotism and industry amid World War I effort. Knight’s award includes the Lord Northcliffe prize of 125 dollars. Other colored workers nationwide, including 8000 at Newport News yards, are highlighted alongside Ferdinand C. Upshur, a Philadelphia native and second lieutenant in the 350th Field Artillery at Camp Dix, proving progress in the new army.

Home Defense Reserve Company 6 Praised For City Duty
The Home Defense Regiment attached to the Department of Public Safety was called into active service Thursday through Saturday during a car strike. Company C members, all colored, patrolled sections of the city under Captains Hart Stevenson and Foley. Sergt. Wm. Robinson reported seven arrests around the Point Breeze Oil Works, Sergt. John H. Parker four arrests and one woman, and Privates Dennis and Frazier stopped a murder attempt by disarming a knife wielder. Wilbur W. Lowther arrested a man distributing money on the street. The battalion Major praised the unit for efficiency and conduct. Col. Mills and Major Bailey plan a conference next Tuesday to discuss increasing the unit.

Two Soldiers of Our Rage Win Fame
Privates Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts of a colored American regiment earned the French Cross de Guerre after a May 16 raid in France. They held off a German raiding party, used knives when rifles failed, and repelled the attack, with Roberts badly wounded but both recovering as heroes among French and American troops. Both soldiers are from the former 15th New York Infantry.
