Lieutenant W. H. Vodery, a Philadelphian, led the 807th Pioneer Infantry band at Camp Dix. His band became the First Army Headquarters Post Band in France, he won top marks at the Bandmasters School in Chaumont with a perfect exam score, and earned a commission as second lieutenant. He also won a Paris Conservatory scholarship and composed a piece performed at a graduation banquet.
