Humble coal passer a hero in shipwreck tale
The Athens steamer Somerset, part of the Merchants and Miners line, was rammed by a French cruiser off the Delaware coast and sank. Colored boys back from France pass through town
A group of wounded Black soldiers from France rode through on Tuesday en route to Lakewood base hospital New Jersey. They included eight men from the 8th Illinois and the 24th 25th Infantry. They suffered shell shock gas exposure and were described as nervous wrecks after a seventeen day journey. They remained determined to fight for liberty despite injuries.
