E C Brown of Brown Stevens Bankers and organizer of Brown Savings Bank of Norfolk Va was unanimously re elected president. The bank boasts the largest resources among colored banks in Virginia.
Brown Savings Bank of Norfolk Va marks ten years of growth with plans to boost deposits to 596000 during the week starting May 5. From a $220866 start in 1918 the resources reached $592545 in 1919 and paid 10 percent dividend last year while increasing surplus by 11 percent. The bank claims over 10000 depositors and 16000 on back of a Christmas Savings plan, and recently acquired a prime corner site at Church and Queen for a new building with four officers listed.

Atlantic City New Jersey May news reports Asbury M E Church selecting Rev Dr A L Martin for a 10th year with a welcome reception planned May 21 at 8 30 p m. A committee of over 300 organizes the event with notable local talent. Martin plans a Centenary Over the Top Rally aiming to raise 8000 dollars. Bishop Camphor’s wife addressed the Africa mission to a packed congregation.

The Wed ay Club hosts Harrisburg’s first Assembly Ball at the Board of Trade building on Thursday evening April 24. Guests included Jessie Palmer Yarborough of Philadelphia, visiting Alda Auter, with Mrs. Ethel Auter Snowe as club president. guests praised gowns, music and décor. An early departure by a line of limousines capped a successful evening.
Under the Philadelphia Hampton Alumni Association and Progressive Business Men of Philadelphia auspices a May 4 educational meeting at Olympia Theatre drew a large crowd. Speeches by P H Sykes, W E Carson, Rev W F Graham, and Boy Scouts preceded Kelly Miller who delivered an acclaimed address on democracy and education, aiding the Scholarship Fund for Hampton Institute.
New York May 5 At the first National Conference on Lynching which opened tonight with a mass meeting in Carnegie Hall demand was made for a Congressional investigation of the lynching evil in the United States General John H Sherbourne presiding. Notable speakers included Emmet O Neal Anna Howard Shaw James Weldon Johnson and Charles Evans Hughes. Gen Sherbourne praised the colored soldiers in the 167th Field Artillery and urged fair play and equal protection of the law for Negroes amid wartime service claims.
The Hotel Brotherhood USA hosted a banquet at New Garrick Hall on April 30 1919 honoring ex-President G A Washington and ex-Marshall J R MeK Attles. Attendees included Maj A F Stevens Hon Amos Scott and others from Wilmington West Chester and Media. Washington received a carved cut set and a mahogany tray while Attles was given a finers bag. Chas Mahoney leading a chorus closed the event with Hall the Brotherhood.
