The fifteenth annual reception for Dr. C A Tindley and wife at East Calvary M E church drew a crowded audience. Flowers blankets of praise from members and friends filled the church as choirs performed and fellow clergymen spoke of his fifteen years of growth in membership and impact. Marcus Mann an 18 year old clerk at Nelson Fry’s pharmacy tracked two men posing as Dr Adler’s messengers. He chased them through Arch and 17th streets, retrieved the borrowed book, toppled one thief in a doorway and helped capture both suspects. Police later tied them to a string of pharmacist robberies.

In July 1916 A E Makel organized the Progressive Business Association at the YMCA 1724 Christ an street to unite black merchants and customers. The group now has about 200 members who pledge mutual patronage to lift earnings and standards, urging blacks to support black businesses and keep dollars in their community.
