Nelson Blackmore and Jacob Jones were badly burned and knocked unconscious after a pick struck dynamite while digging a sewer on 2nd Street near Duncan. Amanda Smith, a renowned evangelist who toured the world, has died at age 78. Her death was reported from New York on March 7, ending a long career of preaching and public ministry.
Judge Gilpin presided as Judge Brown was absent. James W. Allen sued Police Officer H. Lee for damages to his barber shop false arrest and loss of reputation after a Dec 21 1918 incident where Lee arrested Allen then released him to tend a sick friend. The jury awarded Allen 150 dollars with counsel fees of 25 dollars.
In a Magistrates Court a case with Evans of the vice squad. Attorney Silas, counsel for the woman, was held for contempt of court and was placed under arrest by the magistrate. He was later discharged. Later in the morning Russell Allen was brought before Judge Barrett and Samuel Creely was tried for improper conduct with his 13-year-old daughter Jessie and acquitted. The court heard from a probation officer that the child was wayward and immoral.
A Raleigh delegation of colored citizens asked the Senate appropriation committee for a ten thousand dollar appropriation to help celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Negro freedom in North Carolina. The committee of legislative officials considered the request.
