Washington dispatch reports Gen Pershing cableto the War Department denying German made charges that Negro soldiers in the American expeditionary forces faced more dangerous assignments. The general praises their spirit and training and notes losses and high combat readiness.
Atlantic City N J June 25 Eighty colored men left for Camp Dix from the city last week. The National Army draftees were addressed at the colored branch of the Y M C A by Mayor Bacha rach Dr L P Hawkins Attorney Isaac H Nutter and others. They were toasted and bade farewell by relatives and friends.
Dr. Burvin Hardy a known chiropodist and masseur of 1819 Reed Street completed a clinical chiropody course at Temple University last Saturday and earned a certificate. He maintains offices at Willow Grove Park in summer and on Moreland Road near Church Street in winter.
Official county tally shows G Edward Dickerson, candidate for Legislature in the 7th District Thirtieth Ward, credited with 2000 votes. Colored leaders in the district stay determined and plan for the next contest.
Rafe Clem mons, a colored labor leader advocating longshore equal rights, influenced longshoremen to refuse unloading ships over unfair wages. After his removal, he was seized, carried out of Mobile, and ordered not to return.
Philadelphia seeks four thousand women for patriotic work sewing soldiers uniforms at a new Schuylkill Arsenal area factory. Machinery soon installed, 1500 experienced power sewing operators needed now, with training for inexperienced workers. Within months about 4000 total employees, minimum age 18, wages from 12 to 25 dollars weekly. Applications through the U S Civil Service office in the Central Post Office Building.
Colonel Charles Young retired from the U S Army completed a ride from Xenia Ohio to Washington D C on horseback to test his fitness. He arrived safe and sound in good health and is none the worse for the trip.

More than three hundred colored selected men from Maryland will be sent to Howard University Training School on July 15 for special training in the trades. They must be qualified for general military service.
New York City reports the death of Dr. T. 8. P. Miller the oldest colored physician in the city. He died June 16 after a three year illness at Lincoln Hospital. Miller graduated from Howard University medical department in 1874 and was long connected with Freedman's Hospital in Washington.
Public recreation piers at Market and Arch streets will be closed this summer due to federal restrictions on aliens along the Delaware River waterfront. The Board of Education said summer playgrounds will open next week in eleven city sections, with new swimming pools added at Thomas B. Smith, William McCoach and Cohock Sink playgrounds.
German requisitions shrink hemp flax and linen supplies in occupied Belgium forcing revival of spinning wheels, with old devices reappearing and new ones shown in shop windows. Information Belges notes improvements and mentions spinning wheels attached to sewing machines available at Woluwe 248 Louvain as a picturesque yet pitiful sight.
Private Enoch Fry of the 350th Field Artillery was convicted of desertion at Camp Dix Wrightstown New Jersey. He left the camp January 14 and was in Philadelphia by June 34. He received a ten year prison term with loss of pay and a dishonorable discharge.
Baltimore June 27 Dr William Pickens vice president of Morgan College urged spreads of education among the race as key to world democracy. He outlined goals from the eighteenth annual Cooperative Baptist Convention plans include old folks home a $1000 fund for the Baptist Orphanage and a statewide evangelistic drive.
Dr Julia P H Coleman of Washington, D C won a damages judgment in Baltimore against the Washington Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railway for racial discrimination when boarding a car. Attorney W Ashbie Hawkins led the case praising pursuit of rights for interstate passengers and Negro citizens.
Federal investigators visited a poolroom at Thirteenth and South streets on Tuesday night and arrested nineteen colored men, all of draft age. If found to be slackers they will be put into service at once.
The Tribune publishes a survivor’s letter correcting rumors about two Philadelphia men lost on the U S S President Lincoln. Bernard Brown of 1330 Cleveland Ave is identified as the only local casualty, praised as a hero by Robt. T. Hamilton U S N 1506 S 19th St.
Washington reports four new calls totaling 124 525 plus 220 000 issued last night. Whites and colors are entrained to camps Wadsworth Spartansburg Hum phreys Dix Meade and others in July. Specific flows include 33 259 whites July 5 9 and 21 255 whites July 15 19. Colored men are slated July 16 20 and July 29 31 with Delaware New Jersey entries to Meade and Dix.
Miss Marie Lopez of Brooklyn is among the first group of women to go to France with the Women’s Oversea Hospitals. Trained nurse and ambulance driver, she joined the motor corps but now serves in a post operative ward caring for wounded soldiers through the long night shifts.
White and colored orators joined in Columbus Ohio to honor Booker T. Washington and his principles for advancement. Elliott Henderson organized the event and urged mutual aid while praising Washington and Douglass as leaders who rose from humble beginnings.
In Washington DC on June 19, Justice Hits of the Equity Division appointed Richard R. Horner and Samuel Watson as receivers to wind up the Masonic Hall Building Association. The firm, incorporated in 1883, owned real estate around $60,000. The long court battle began with Leonard C. Bailey’s 1914 suit claiming the charter expired and operation violated the law.
Memphis reports on June 18 indicate the Ku Klux Klan is being revived in Texas Oklahoma Louisiana Tennessee Mississippi Alabama South Carolina Georgia and Florida. Whippings tar and feathering and murder mark its past and officials warn of renewed white supremacist violence against Black residents in the region.
A second colored unit joined the Philadelphia Home Defense Reserves Tuesday night at the Lombard Street Armory. Captain Charles W. Holland leads the new company with Lt Charles Polk and Lt William Holmes, joined by Sgt Howard Moliston. The event followed Holland’s earlier Plattsburg exam success and honors Captain Alonzo Myers for overseas service.
Pittsburgh, June 25. After the Federation of American Zionists adopted resolutions, Mrs. Joseph Fels stated Palestine will be the ideal republic guiding world governance. The plan calls for political equality, public ownership of resources, land possession rules, cooperative enterprises, universal public education, and Hebrew as the medium of instruction.
Allen D. Wood a longtime New York post office clerk died and was buried from St Phillip s Church. A Charlottesville native who moved to New York in 1883 he was active in public affairs and prominent in many race movements.
Washington June 25. Secretaries Baker and Daniels state regulations will allow Americans in military service to cast ballots in the coming Congressional elections next fall. Only soldiers from states with absentee voting laws are covered, and the ballot will not interfere with military operations or training.
Bristol Pa June 26 On last Saturday night the body of Tillman 35 of Chavialen S C was found on the tracks of the P R R It is probable he was struck by a train while crossing the tracks He was one of the colored workers at the Merchant Shipbuilding plant here Coroner Rice will investigate his death.
The NAACP announces protests to Governor Philip against excluding colored people from the Wisconsin State Tuberculosis Sanatorium citing officer statements on odor and inadvisability. It also questions War Department policy for Black soldiers and condemns coercive tactics in War Savings Stamp campaigns in Shreveport, urging fair treatment and loyalty from Negro communities.
Mrs. Mary Gertrude Palmer of 2226 Lombard street recently passed the Pennsylvania State Board of Undertakers examination, received license, and registered at City Hall. A Eckels College graduate, she prepared elite funeral parlors and promises dignified service and strict sanitation practices for the living and the dead.
The statement notes that during June July and August the office will close at 1 o clock on Saturdays.
