Dismissed were T Thomas Fortune of Trenton Dr P L Hawkins and Julia H Dorsey of Atlantic City Isaac H Nutter of Atlantic City was to have been named chief at 2500 a year but never formally appointed though he acted in that role without pay.

Employer under $500 bail for aiding deserter escape
Atlantic City July 23 Thomas L. O Connor proprietor of a Boardwalk store was arrested and released under $500 bail charged with aiding Charles Johnson alias Smith Booye who deserted his company in Washington D C weeks ago and was employed by O Connor to escape when detectives came to arrest Johnson. Johnson was caught after a chase and admitted he was a deserter and had cut his uniform to tatters and will not serve as a soldier awaiting orders from his commanding officer.

Death and Burial of Mrs Maria Louise Cooper in Philadelphia
After months of illness Mrs Maria Louise Cooper aged 84 died July 19 at 2119 Carpenter Street Philadelphia. A former Drexel Bank employee she served 31 years and earned a pension. She is survived by three daughters and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Zion A M E Church with interment in Eden Cemetery. Floral tributes came from Drexel Bank employees, Amos Scott family, and her grandchildren.

In Wilmington Delaware July 23 state detectives with constables pursued and arrested Thompson Empson Sherman Oakley Ernest Waples and Hattie Sidney all colored after a miles long chase. An automobile truck carrying 31 quarts of whiskey concealed in milk cans was seized, owned by a downstate milk shipper who used Oakley to drive between Middleton and Wilmington daily. The group confessed planned delivery to a camp meeting at Hamtown near Middletown and faces Magister Gillis for violating liquor transport laws.
