John H Clower aged 82 died at his residence 865 N 13th st Philadelphia on June 25. He was born May 11 1836 in Clinton Jones County Ga and moved to Philadelphia in 1867 working as a cabinet maker. Survived by two sisters four grandchildren and no great grandchildren. Funeral held at a church with burial at Eden Cemetery.

Clifford becomes Special Assistant to the Director with Sgt John M H Wil of the 36th Field Artillery as his representative and assistant. The Conservation Soldiers Insurance program is handled from Lieut Clifford's office and aimed at promoting War Risk Insurance conservation among colored soldiers and sailors.

Bell of the Ladies Auxiliary asked for votes for Bean De Fragier, a pioneer schoolteacher, who is contesting the Evening Telegram for a free trip to the battlefields of France. the society gave her a warm welcome and a 14 dollar check to fund 1,000 votes.

Florida Senate Ignores Memorial From Negro Uplift Association
Talsee Florida June 30 Only weeks ago the Florida state senate refused to list on its journal a memorial from the Negro Uplift Association of Florida demanding a longer school term for colored children and reforms at the industrial school. The petition pleads for better labor conditions sanitary facilities and new laws for prisoners and against lynching while noting the role of Negroes in the war effort. The group asks the legislature to adopt its recommendations to stem a quiet exodus of Negro citizens. The petition was submitted by respected members of the community and returned to officials. The act is described as a grave insult comparable to oppression in Russia and Germany.

Widow collects pension for three soldier husbands
In Washington on June 28 an African American widow draws three monthly checks totaling 127.50 from the government for the deaths and service of three husbands. She says one husband died in action and another had a large life insurance policy, with a third marriage to a returned soldier.
