Nashville report states Tennessee lawmakers pass a woman suffrage measure removing the poll tax requirement. West Tennessee senators weigh reinstating the poll tax clause as white and Black voters’ influence looms.
National Guard and local clubs attended a reception for Editor Anderson. The event ran from 8 30 to 11 with dancing after gracious congratulations from hundreds of friends. Public entertainers performed solos as Pastor Penalver J Reese Europe and toast master led the program. The Tribune offers congratulations to Editor Anderson for his hard work and sacrifice.
Batontown January 22 Alphea of Pinehurst the cow on Charles D Cleveland farm near Eatontown has been named the best milk producing cow in New Jersey by the American Guernsey Cattle Club. Her yearly record shows 14717 pounds of milk and 810 pounds of fat.
Atlantic City January 22 A District Court bailiff Edward Bailey arrived at Fanny Robinsons home at Indiana and Arctic avenues with a replevin order for a piano overdue on payments. A mob of about a dozen men attacked Bailey, damaged the front door, and police and guards intervened as an expressman removed the $250 piano. Bailey was hospitalized and five men were arrested.
Elias Ward a 53 year old Newton Coal Company driver from 1405 Naudain street died at Mt Sinia Hospital from blood poisoning after a strike related shooting in a coal yard at Front and Tasker streets. Edward Green of tenth street near Lombard is held without bail and will face homicide charges.
Detective McCarthy was sent to Jacksonville to extradite William Walker, a colored man arrested on a murder charge. Walker, formerly of Rodman Street near Tenth, is accused of shooting Thomas Burke of Bainbridge Street five years ago.
A large crowd gathered at Pinn Memorial Baptist Church despite rain for the unveiling of the Seldon J M Brock Memorial tablet. Miss Bernice Edmunds and Miss Florence Blue unveiled the piece as Dr Charles A Lewis presided, with tributes from Sunday school and choir members and short addresses by church and community leaders. The service featured prayers, readings, and solos as relatives and friends reflected on Brock’s life and service.
The Y. W. C. A. Southwest Branch installed officers at Varick M. E. Zion church Sunday at 3 30. Despite bad weather the event featured a strong program with the Robert C. Ogden Band making its debut and a report on Philadelphia’s colored women’s facilities. New members joined weekly in the Arch Street physical training class and job placement efforts continued for factory work. A future Temperance platform meeting is planned at Zoar M. B. church. New arrivals include Miss Griffin Worcester Mrs Theresa Craft and Miss Nora Scott.
Charles Edwin Russell, dean of American Magazine writers, pleads before three thousand Socialists at Broad Street Theatre for equal rights. He argues there is only one race the human race and condemns white supremacist rhetoric. He notes violence and discrimination in the South and urges equal chances everywhere.
Police investigated a suspected double death at a hotel near 13th and Lombard. Charles Williams of Camden New Jersey was found dead and Sarah Clark of 763 Markoe Street was found unconscious and later recovered at Douglass Hospital. The case remained unclear with Miss Clark not speaking as of Thursday night.
A terse note states that the office will publish the writer's state of oversight while the article is ignored by the editorial staff. The brief implies no action taken on the piece and confirms no response from the office.
Dr Mossell states that long vanished accusations against Douglass Hospital were thoroughly investigated and proven groundless by his board and by the State Board of Charities. He accuses political motive in withholding state support and notes his personal role in founding and financing the hospital. He describes firing a social worker as necessary and vows to seek legislative investigation.
In Carlisle Pennsylvania John Humbert demanded to cash a fifty thousand dollar check at Farmers Trust Co. bank. After the cashier refused Humbert grew angry alleging bias and fired at the cashier but caused no fatalities. He was quickly arrested.
Harrisburg Pa January 20 The mysterious John Nelson who appeared on Halloween night 1915 rushed a farmer J M Sickler and killed him with a knife He is educated cultured and about 50 years old He declines to discuss himself or his whereabouts and shows no interest in saving him from execution He will have one more chance to speak to the Pardon Board before the electric chair is carried out.
The Central Michigan Coal Company plans a Marlborough factory in a $500000 lease to produce fertilizers peat and other alkali products. About 600 colored workers will be employed. O D Ford Realty and Marlborough Land Corp arranged the sale. Lynn Cochrane will be sales manager for several states and E H Thomas will cover others. Start-up is planned for spring with a 100 ton per day minimum capacity.
The Lombard Street Presbyterian Church hosted a record breaking parents reception on Tuesday night January 15. Pastor Rev W E Griffin chaired with Ella Still superintendent and teachers. Mrs Evans spoke on organized Bible class value and Mrs Freeman discussed Sunday school problems.
The Interdenominational Ministers Conference Committee met at Holy Trinity Baptist Church to plan a great race meeting. They chose Olympia Theatre for a Sunday afternoon event on February 25 and will reconvene at Holy Trinity next Tuesday at 3 p m to issue the full program and final plans.
Isaac Ganey of Florence County South Carolina died Sunday at Agnes Hospital from burns suffered Saturday when his clothes caught fire near Penrose Avenue along the Pennsylvania Railroad. Initially he told police two men threw him into the fire but later said he was napping beside the fire and woke to find his clothes ablaze.
In Media Pennsylvania on Friday the Common Pleas Court upheld the Morton School Board’s right to segregate pupils by race in the new school building. Edward Mayo sued to allow his children to attend, alleging discrimination. Testimony showed the principal claimed segregation for efficiency and cited Cheyney Institute guidance. The jury found for the board.
Charles Zeublin of Boston will speak on Race Reciprocity at Curtis Publishing Co auditorium in Philadelphia tonight January 27. Admission is free and a call is issued for Black citizens to attend to support civil rights amid local segregation and court decisions in Media.
Chicago judge Bowles ruled Marjorie Delbridge a delinquent child noting a parent cannot surrender a child as property. The six year old, described as a white girl, had been under care of a colored caregiver, Mammy Jackson, and was observed in corridor interactions as the court examined custody and guardianship issues.
